Noisy Briggs V twins
Ok.. it just drives me crazy, but my engine is all tight, I have checked the
thing inside and out and adjusted the valves twice.. On idle, is it just me, or are these Briggs engines just noisy by nature.. It isn't knocking or anything, I just had the cover off and it is like new inside.. it's only got a few hours on it, just wondering.. It sounds like most of the ones on Youtube, etc..thanks.' My old Sportster used to sound like this too..just wondering. I need some roller rockers. |

Re: Noisy Briggs V twins
Only a few hours? Should take about 5 hours to settle in and fully broke in at 10 hrs. Then it should purr like a kitten.

Re: Noisy Briggs V twins
If its bone stock, the decompressor makes a little noise if idleing to slow.

Re: Noisy Briggs V twins
At a low enough rpm the decompression starts to open the valve, it will be hard to turn over and start if you don't have it. It is usually under 600rpm or something like that.
How about some noise material in the engine compartment, like convoluted foam or something? You can get it from packaging companies I don't know if the weight of the foam matters or not. Otherwise if the temp is not too high you can get the butyl peel and stick roofing sealer stuff (vinyl or foil faced) and line the inside around the engine that will kill some sound coming through the body. If the seat flips does it seal? Try some truck topper foam tape around the edge to seal it, etc. Set the valve lash on it that can help. You can also try a heavier oil but its not good for power and mpg, or an oil additive like STP though I don't know if its recommended in those or not. My onan takes 15w-40 in the manual, that is fairly heavy stuff. Sometimes you can change the valve lash to change when the comp release works, but I don't know what to tell you. I do know if the lash is huge it can not work at all and be difficult to start. Most people run the last quite tight on these, but if it is starting to work at your idle speed you might be able to make the lash just a little larger and have it kick in just under your idle speed (if this actually is the issue). I don't know if that would work but does on some small engines. Usually equipment idles an air cooled engine faster and its never a problem, the idles are near always over 1K rpm for equipment. |

Re: Noisy Briggs V twins
I have mine set so low on idle, ..it's low.
I like listening to it idle low..for a minute or two anyway..and you can hear the whole engine working.. I guess I am too used to listening to my NOrthstar engine..it doesn't make any noise, and there are eight big pistons in it. After it warms up, or if it is at a high idle, you can't hear it..and I have leaky manifolds too..so I am hearing pops and all kind of crap with it.. I love the briggs v twin design.. since this is my 'hobby' on the mechanical end of things ( a few of my buds and neighbors have Harley's ) I will plan on something long term to have a really quiet bada$$ vtwin... it will just take a while on my last kid in college budget. My good camera is wacked right now, or I would video the thing.. I have some good insulation material if I wanted to use it..but it's quiet otherwise. |

Re: Noisy Briggs V twins
Might also be the oil leaking down I had a quad4 that did that, made a heck of a racket on cold starts. Finally found they had a special oil filter with a valve in it to stop that. Slow idle is not going to pump that much oil.

Re: Noisy Briggs V twins
That is not good. Most of those if you fast idle and modulate the rpm a little you will hear it come and go.
