Vanguard headers
Couple of questions. I put the header on my 16 HP Vanguard. It sounds pretty good and surprisingly quiet for open headers. Do I need to put a muffler on it for back pressure issues? If my plugs are burning ok can I just leave open headers? The tubes are so light and not that long should I reinforce them in another spot other than on the header flange bolting into the block?

Re: Vanguard headers
In my opinion no muffler is necessary for back pressure on a 4 stroke, especially if everything is seated/ broken in. I/m surprised it's not obnoxiously loud though! As far as bracing, having a brace of some kind towards the back across both pipes would be a good idea, as well as header wrap to keep the seat cooler.

Re: Vanguard headers
Usually if it helps at all it will help lower rpm torque. You could just run one of those dirt bike mufflers/spark arrestors, they are just a straight through muffler that does not muffle much with a spark screen. The rice rocket mufflers are not a whole lot better but larger and a little quieter. Or the 16hp clone I put in we ended up with a turbo type small car muffler, and it thumps has a real low tone and louder than a lawnmower. I'm going to put a normal car muffler on so its quiet. If you want cheap, get a SS tip for a car, some have a little resonator in them but will not block any sparks and they will still be loud all right lol.

Re: Vanguard headers
Just trying to help. I have to be quiet where I am, or well I can go faster if I'm quiet lol. Plus I ride wooded areas so not wanting to get any attention or fires going. Something like a older grand am muffler is pretty small iirc 13" long case and cheap. I used one on a generator 10hp wow was it quiet then. I also like the one TheNewGuy used its a dual outlet muffler for an old VW bug, he has a video of it on utube it sounds cool too. He posted here too someplace. My clone is not going to sound like a twin though, so not worried about hearing it. I would like to put a cutout on it can't figure out how yet....how to do it cheap lol since its not that important. Not long spring will be here and I'll lose my time to play on the PC so much.

Re: Vanguard headers
The not too loud comment I made was quickly changed. When I fired it up it was only idleing due to no throttle hook up. When I " goosed it " it about shook the windows out of the garage! Although I like the noise ( I am a Harley rider ) I best quite it down some. Project is coming well and now its mechanically sound . Next the body!!! Thanks again!! Hey any throttle/choke setup pics for Vanguard?

Re: Vanguard headers
This is a Honda, but the concept should work on a Briggs. It's an electric door lock actuator for the choke, and the stock ez-go cable for the accel.
