18hp Briggs Bogging
Getting some of these bugs worked out on the new toy. The next problem is the engine boggs down and spits gas out of the carb when the throttle is floored. The valves were way out of adjustment which caused the starter to have a hard time turning the engine over and a ticking noise. Engine lacks power. Adjusted the valves it sounds like a new engine, but is slow to rev up/bogs down. Is this a carb issue or something else?
Thanks |

Re: 18hp Briggs Bogging
I'd check everything in the fuel delivery first.... hoses, filter, make sure it has fresh gas and fuel pump output. Make sure it has fire at both cylinders, it will run on one. You can check the troubleshooting section for the "compression test" procedure too. Then I would think it's carb rebuild time.

Re: 18hp Briggs Bogging
Fresh tank of gas. Fuel pump works great and its getting gas to the carb. It wouldnt run at all before. I blew compressed air through the gas inlet port at the carb and gook came out the other side. Why does this carb have two fuel line "ports"? There is nothing on the other one. Both cylinders are getting spark. I will do a compression test and post the #'s.

I must have missed the compression test procedure. Cant seem to find it on here. The briggs engines have a compression release dont they? How is the test done?

Re: 18hp Briggs Bogging
Take the both plugs out and spin it WOT till the reading won't go any higher. The other fuel port is an overflow. I'd run a hose down towards the ground from it.

Re: 18hp Briggs Bogging
If gunk came out of the carb that would be the first thing I cleaned, if you didn't.

Re: 18hp Briggs Bogging
Any tips on how to clean it? The engine starts easily(dont even have to use the choke), idles and sounds great. Just has zero power. Feels more like a 36 volt cart with old batteries than a BB.

Re: 18hp Briggs Bogging
Matt, sounds like the same issue I had with mine. I had a home made filter on the intake, it was not letting me get enough air into the carb. What are you using for the air filter?
