Vanny backfiring through carb

What causes an engine to backfire through carb? I have a 14hp vanguard on my utv. It ran excellent till I tried to start it today.I pulled the plugs and cleaned them.It started right up. Then I started to tweek the mixture screw on the carb .I put it back to the original setting(I think) and now it just pops and sputters. Any ideas?

If mixture its usually because its too lean. Most don't even have mixture on them anymore due to EPA.

sho, thanks for the reply. Here's a pic of the screw I turned. Do you know which way is lean?

You should not be able to adjust it enough to make it run crappy with the limiter cap on it. Try a set of plugs. BTW clockwise is lean

I hate those caps, most of them are too lean no matter where the it is adjusted.

changed the ones in the 23 also
