Tapered shaft?
How do I get around a taper shaft in a Honda 24hp? I have been told that I need to change it from being tapered? and what are the dimensions of a stock shaft....1" ?

Re: Tapered shaft?
Most of the traditional big block conversions on here are using a 1'' shaft and comet clutch. Mine looks just like that one, only it's a Briggs..and I am using a stock EZ go clutch as it fits that taper.
There are lots of clutches available that fit that taper. |

Re: Tapered shaft?
use a clutch designed for the taper shaft, like the stock clutch.

Re: Tapered shaft?
I have a clutch for a Kawi Mule about a 01 or 02 model,....It has a tapered bore,...will trade for straight shaft clutch if it would work for you. I emailed CCP to see if that adapter would work never heard back from them,...

Re: Tapered shaft?
Most GC are 30mm taper, iirc 10:1 taper?. Most lawn/utility type engines that are taper are for generators and are different, that is why they are so cheap because they fit nothing else. You can machine the crank, or have an adapter made to fit it (this has been done), or change the crank to a 1" keyed as is common for lawn engine used in carts. Most carts use the same taper stock, most people put in 1" big block and buy a 1" clutch, or use the CPP adapter to fit a taper clutch (stock or replacement) to the 1" crank. The only taper v twin I ever found to fit a taper CVT clutch was a special made unit a vanguard 20hp built for a midget car racing organization, it was also somewhat modified.
The CPP adapter goes on a 1" shaft, then a typical golf cart taper clutch goes on that. The 1" shaft must not protrude more than 1/8" past the adapter (its too big) so you put a spacer behind it (that comes with the adapter) to the shoulder on the crank to keep the adapter from sliding back on the crank. The adapter locks down when the taper clutch is bolted on. The one I put in a G9 I cut the crank way back and used no spacer due to engine clearance issues, it has worked perfectly. People have talked about using a stub shaft on the flywheel for reverse rotation CC carts, I saw one that did it. B&S you can buy a stub 1" but not sure anyone has used one of those iirc the one I saw posted was made by the poster or for, by a machine shop. Last option would be to fit a sprocket or something to the taper or flywheel and run a jackshaft for the clutch, but that takes up room. |

Re: Tapered shaft?
The engine he is showing at the top of the page has a 30mm 1:10 taper shaft. Honda made alot of them for utility vehicle applications for companies like Bush Hog and Cub Cadet.

Re: Tapered shaft?
That is great, then just get a stock replacement clutch for a cart. Not factory, a comet or tech or whatever you can change the spring in.

Re: Tapered shaft?
The two stroke clutch he has may work...cpp lists a stock clutch that fits the two or four stroke I think..
