Engine swap
Does anyone know if you can take an engine out of a riding lawnmower and
turn it up ( instead of it laying on its back ) ??? I may have another project Cart, but it needs an engine. I can find Mowers with working engines fairly cheap. Any help would be great. Thanks, Mikee. |

Re: Engine swap
I don't think that will work, unless you find a horizontal shaft engine lawn mower ,sometimes you can find them on ebay. hope this helps

I've seen it happen to one that was rolled on it's side in a ditch while running. Luckally the person on it jumped off before it rolled and no one was hurt. -Scott H. |

Re: Engine swap
You can buy a centrifugal clutch to put on the lawn mower then make like a converter kit to run to the rear end but the clutch I wouldnt think would do that good in this situation. I think.

Re: Engine swap
A vertical-shaft motor won't even run correctly on its' side even if you changed the necessary obvious things like the carburetor. The flywheel is balanced totally different to run in the vertical position,so crank rotation would suffer badly, plus verticals have a completely different oiling system, and if its' an older unit(pre-ohv)it will be splash-lube and the dipper will be facing the wrong-way to throw oil properly.A lot of mowers such as larger Sears,Wheel-Horse,Cub-Cadet use horizontals, some are V-Twins,some opposed-twins,either will work, the V-s' are preferred due to more compact size.Hope this helps.

Re: Engine swap
Better to run a 90 degree gearbox if you can find one. I know what you mean the large verticals are pretty cheap in comparison even new.

Re: Engine swap
I have a few 90 degree gear boxes from Honda ATV's I will sell you. I had the same idea because I had a few big verticle shaft engines laying around. The more I looked into it and advice from this site I decided it was too big a job for my limited welding talents. I sold the motor and bought a horizontal shaft.

Re: Engine swap
Sometimes less is more, though I still like the idea of a pair of clones lol.
