What to look for when buying a Briggs 18hp
Since my motor is shot I've been looking around and found a good deal on a used 18hp vanguard is there any thing I should look for when I go to see it and what do I need to bring with me since is already pulled from it's mount. I'm thinking a boat gas can with hose and prime bulb
And a battery with some jumper cables Also will ratcheting it down in the bed of the truck allow me to crank it |

Re: What to look for when buying a Briggs 18hp
Not to belabor the obvious, but you want a horizontal, straight shaft on the engine. You can't really check compression these motors so hearing it run is a definite plus and it sounds like you have that figures out, if it still has the wiring harness. Besides that, you might take a peek at this pdf so you can tell a little more about it from the model number.....Good Luck! How much are they asking for it?

Re: What to look for when buying a Briggs 18hp
When it first starts it will jump a little..never had mine flip over, unmounted and unstrapped. That does sound decent, hopefully he didn't clean it up too much, so you can see. A little bit more..and you can get him lower .. but 400 isn't bad for a decent engine. If its on its last leg might not be. Mine is a used cell tower genset motor, and its running fine.
