Default 23hp Briggs Upgrades

I have been thinking how I wanna join the big block club for a while now. So I finally bought my first new Vtwin! Its a 23hp briggs vanguard. I installed it in a 98 electric EZGO and got it ready just in time for the 4th of july. I swapped in a 4 stroke EZGO TXT rear end, it has a new 28 degree driven clutch, comet 780 primary and a EZGO st 350 drive belt. I built the engine cradel, fabbed up the exhaust, strapped in a boat gas tank. Everyone had a blast riding it. The first time I hit that gas I was totally suprised how much torque they have. Was not ready for the whiplash. It pulls the wheels off the ground in foward and spins the tires on pavement in reverse. Anyway I just wanted to make the cart run in time for the 4th of july get together, now I plan to tear it all apart, paint the body, build a roll cage, install lights, and make it street legal to drive to my shop downtown.

Question is what performance upgrades should I do to the motor while it is out of the cart and new? I dont want to void the warranty if that can happen with doing engine mods but I definately need more top speed. It gets to 24 mph almost instantly and runs out of gearing. The cart has 22" tires. I'm looking at ordering the high rev kit from CPP. Is there anything else I should do now? What about the performance valve springs and what can I expect out of a performance cam?

The engine governor was causing problems putting too much pressure on the throttle cable and breaking them. I then bypassed the governor by removing the bolt that holds the gov shaft to its internal pivot shaft(for lack of technical terms). Works like a champ but does the internal governor need to be removed or can I have it bypassed and leave it in there? Will any damage occur? Thanks

Sounds like a great job on the BB Matt! Congrats! The rev kit is the most bang for the buck and should include shims for the springs. Ask Tom about his Isky springs instead. A lot of folks do the timing advance key, I didn't see much difference myself. The bypassed gov shouldn't be a big problem, just uneeded weight on the cam, and with the rev kit it will be spinning faster than designed to spin! As far as the cam it's doing to give you more power in the upper RPM ranges and as you found out that's not a major factor with these motors. If you are pulling the side cover to remove the cam weights and have the money, why not? Taller gears, bigger tires would help but see how you like the speed with the rev kit first, you may end up saving the extra dough for better brakes.... As far as the warranty, Tom obviously does these mods to new motors but then he's authorized. If you had a problem and couldn't put it back easily to stock form my guess is that you would have a problem with it. Good Luck and get up some pics!

The rev kit came in today. Havent put it in yet but I cant wait to get done. How do they sound running at high rpm? Do they get any smoother with the rev kit? Right now my engine runs very smoothly up to 24 mph, any higher than that and it sounds like it will blow. The air filter cover begins to rattle and the engine sounds bad at that speed. I stay well below that until the rev kit's in but I was curious how smooth/loud are they above 4000 rpm?

Tom really is the guy to talk to, he's been there..done that. Plus he is just fun to talk to. I myself found the advanced timing key, rev kit where good upgrades, the cam was icing on the cake. I've turned 6k with the mod's and it sounds solid as a rock. I will say I don't go over that, I'm afraid the clutch will explode and we don't want metal parts flying thru the cars body parts into OUR body parts! I run 12" rims with 215x40x12low pro tires, stock rear gears, stiffer springs in the 780 clutch (2k ingagement) and with the trailtech speedo/tack I've done 50 mph before I let off due to "pucker" factor, I'm only running stock rear drum brakes and the older style steering box, gets alittle scarey at those speeds. If you experiance "bogging/lag" thru the rpm range, a Mikuni (I would recomend a single) will take care of that problem, also CC-John has some excellant knowledge and tips on the carb issues. Can't wait to see what you decside to do. Please give us updates, we all value your opinion and builds.

Whoa I couldnt imagine what 50 feels like on a golf cart. I commend you for taking it that fast! On that note about the bogging, I have experienced with this new engine two totally random occurances where it will be running great at 3/4 to 7/8 throttle then it stalls and bogs for a few seconds but keeps running. I pulled to the side of the road and then kept going after that it was fine. Any idea what might cause this? Oh also after driving full throttle it back fires when I turn the engine off. Is this normal?

How does it run with the rev kit? I'm hoping to do a BB conversion next year--Not sure if I want the 18 or the 23, but I need to get into the 30-35 mph range with stock gears and 22's. Wondering if this is possible?

And I guess a rear disc brake set-up would be nice, too.

Dave, my best advice is to call Tom (CPP), He is a straight shooter, will ask what you want to do with your car and sell you the kit is right for you. Did I mention.. he doesn't even give me a "kickback" for this I've never done an 18 hp (ask Ron "The NewGuy"), I've done the 23hp and Wilson is a "geek" 20hp, , but which ever you decide....you will be amazed. As for 30-35 get atleast the rev kit and advanced timeing key, the cam will let it rpm to 6K, as for the brakes...I'm running stock Yamaha drums and the WOOO facture is not great....upgrade the brakes.

Thanks for the advice I'd already figured on the advance key and rev kit--not sure about the cam. The wife says the cart needs to go faster out on the county (country) road, and of course I have to agree I know Ron has the 18--I'll have to search for anything I can find. I'm probably a year out from doing this and just trying to get my ducks in a row.
