Default Blown up 16 hp vanny

I had a connecting rod snap on my 16 HP vanny. Took the piston skirt out and scratched up the crank pretty good. Cylinder is perfect and the piston other than the skirt is like new. I have looked around and found a place that will sell me a new short block for 680 free shipping and all the gaskets. If I rebuild with a new crank rod piston and all the rest I will be in the four hundred dollar mark at least. Any of you guys out there have any feelings on what to do or which way to go? Maybe better places to get a short block or maybe a good price on a complete motor?

If the piston isn't gouged too badly I would use it again, and just emory cloth the crank and put a new stock rod in..lube it up with something sticky when reassembling, like STP or bardahl.
I am a cheapskate, I rebuilt a 295 robin with broken rod, and I just cleaned up the surfaces and replaced the broken parts and it has been running fine ever since. I did have an issue getting the crap ring compressor I had to work right..ended up sticking one of the old oil rings on the new piston (I did replace one piston) so it is a little weak on one side, but it runs fine. I guess if you have plenty of cash I would figure the cost to make it "like" a short block and compare the costs.. otherwise, my goal would be to go cheap.

Thanks. I have got a guy who will give me 200 bucks for the remaining parts. The connecting rod took out most of the bottom of the cylinder. I did not notice it till I took out the crank. The block is ruined and the crank is gouged up pretty good. On another note I see you have an EZ GO. I have one home that a valve stuck and bent. How do the valve guides come out? I got the valve out but the guide is messed up pretty bad.

I'm pretty sure the valve guides have to be pressed out & new ones pressed in and then "cut to fit" by a machine shop.

Working through the same thing right now! You can get a NEW 16hp Vanguard "drop in" replacement (with the correct tapered shaft for the stock clutch for around $1200 - with the 3 year warranty. Sounds like in your original post you were $1080 with all the rebuild parts.

Good luck - keep us posted.
