gx390 taper, fit stock CC clutch?
hello all. well im close to repowering my 89 club car ds. I was looking at clone hondas and decided i would just spend a little more money and get the real deal, the gx390. I found one on CL, brand new never run shipped to my door for about $400, it think that is a pretty good deal, so i called the guy and he said it has a tapered shaft with threads in the end? my question is will my stock tapered clutch off my 89 club car fit the honda tapered shaft or are they two different taper sizes? and if they are different is there a adapter? also since the honda is tapered i doubt i will beable to cut the shaft to a shorter length to fit between the frame rails? any info would be greatly apreciated! thanks in advance! oh and if it matters the clutch i have says club car max rpm 5000 on the side

One of the site sponsors Cart Parts Plus sells the adaptor. You do have to cut the shaft and drill and tap for the clutch bolt. I still use my stock clutch on my 89 cc with 16hp vanguard without any problems.

The CPP adapter is to adapt a straight shaft to a tapered clutch. The Honda is probably for a generator, hence the tapered shaft and the taper is different from cart motor tapers. There is no adapter made for that taper, sorry.

thanks flintrock, thats what i thought, to bad cause that was a good price. well this morning I pulled the trigger and just bought the 420cc 15hp lifan from HD. Atleast I will beable to start on the motor swap then. upgrade later maybe. Even if it lasts a year its worth the 249$ + free shipping.

Re: gx390 taper, fit stock CC clutch?
We have run a carolstream lifan for two summers now and he has not even changed the original oil yet lol. I got on him about that. No governor either, but make sure you give it some break in time took nearly the whole summer before it loosened up.
You can buy a crank for the honda, or take it to a machine shop and have a special adapter made. You might be able to have it turned down to the right taper not sure. |

Re: gx390 taper, fit stock CC clutch?
yeah 400$ isnt that good of a deal when you throw in the price of machining or buying a new crank... im doing this motor swap on my 89' club car so If i dont like the outcome of the clonda I will build my 91' with a bigger price budget, I think im doing pretty good on this build so far and sticking within my "low budget build." Ive spend around 500$ so far and I getting the cold shoulder from the "ol' Lady" Im just hoping when this thing comes out of the garage on its own power It will change her outlook. And then maybe I can upgrade to a v-twin for my 91'.
The tally so far.... 266$ for new 15hp lifan after tax and free shipping from HD 150$ for all new driven clutch internals and new bushing front and rear My lift is a 7" homemade beefed up Z lift in front and swapping the axle under the leaf springs+ adding a helper leaf spring+ 3" blocks in the rear. And the best part is my two carts were absolutely free from my work! I still need to buy new rear shocks for rear and maybe a longer belt. If I do need a new belt what size do you recommend? I think the stock is a 1" wide and around 37-38" long. Should i go to a 1 3/16" belt like other people do on here? whats the advantage to this? and what length should i shoot for? |

Re: gx390 taper, fit stock CC clutch?
oh and also need to buy new rims and tires still. thinking about the cheapo 8" steal black rims with the offset and maybe some 24"x 10" wide tires. First off how much further do the offset 8" cheap rims stick out then the stock ones? And with a 7" lift how tall of tires should i beable to clear? and the front z lift pushes the front end 5" further out than stock if that matters.... ? thanks again guys!

Re: gx390 taper, fit stock CC clutch?
I'm trying to find out what you do about the clutches, really the 1" clutches look pretty cheezy to me. I know some have them machined. The high lifts can fit up to 27 tires, but I don't know how high your lift is. 24s would be great, the gearing would really help speed. You might want to get the springs and timing key for your clone they are pretty cheap, then get the head cut. That is what I am doing for a little more and see what happens. They have good power but do not like to rev very high, the one I did runs same speed as a stock G9 engine but lot more power at normal lower rpm say 4K rpm and under. It will burn the 22s pulling or climbing. It has stock yamaha clutches except for a cut secondary sheave that gives a lower initial gear on takeoff. I would go with the larger belt if possible but I don't yet know how you swap to it or what you need. A guy here might have me do a CC so looking into it. 1" belt selection is not very good from what I see. Wider belt holds up a little better but more importantly it is very common to snowmobiles and easy to get, easy to find clutches that fit that. Yamaha uses 1 3/16 belts.
Far as rims get what you want but get the offset. Most stock are 3.5+3.5 that means inside and outside of rim measure. My rims are 3+5 so they are .5 more away from the inner fender well and stick out the outside 1.5 more. With 11 wide tires (22x11- the tires hang out over rims a little so you need the clearance inside. If you get an 8" rim you need a special one that clears the brakes a bell inside half, today I would just get 10" and avoid that issue but these work great and with an ATV rated tire over 2 ply they don't sag or lean at all they are solid. 2 ply tires can get punctures a lot easier I'd get an atv rated tire unless you have light use or only sand. Many rims now are only 7 wide, 3+4. Only other suggestion I would make is if you keep the cart you will likely only get one set of wheels, you might live with them for a while, IMO is worth a few extra dollars to get something nice some of the alum rims are quite cheap. I bought my rims on '99! Still have them, douglas alum wheels and ITP caps, they still look good so do tires. But here only use it mostly around 4 months and I never run pavement only dirt/gravel/grass/woods/sand so they don't wear much, oh and some snow a few times lol. I might get 12" for another cart it would depend, the wheels really make them look cooler. |
