sprint car starter?
am in process of my first build currently on my 2000 carryall xrt. have purchased an 18 hp briggs so far. not installed yet. my question to the group is that i want to use this cart for a pit vehicle for our sprint car operation. i think that it would be capable of push starting our 360 sprint car with the briggs and posi rear. my son{the sprint car driver} thinks that it will probably just spin the tires. we currently use a 500 polaris sportsman 4x4 which will barely start the car only if atv is in low range and 4x4. other teams use mini trucks, atvs, or side by sides to do this job. i believe that the cc can do it. my only reservations are-can the stock cc clutch take the pressure of getting the car moving in gear from a dead stop? may possibly have to add weight to bed for extra traction? has anybody tried this? what are the pitfalls? what other parts would be needed to make this setup durable enough to do this for serveral seasons? any info would be appreciated. thanks

Re: sprint car starter?
In my opinion your going to burn the belt, sliding the wide tires of a Sprint car from a dead stop will be hard on it.

Re: sprint car starter?
I never had much luck pullin things with anything with a belt drive. Burned up belts on snowmobiles trying to tow dead soldiers to the nearest road. They have pretty wide belts made from kevlar at 75 bucks apiece! And pullin over snow not asphalt with one of the tires being 40 foot wide. Maybe a chain drive cart? Good luck racing I LOVE to watch the sprint cars. My buddy drove one once for an injured driver. He was a sportsman class dirt driver. When he got out of the sprint car after the hot laps his eyes were as big as dinner plates!!!

Re: sprint car starter?
thanks for the input on my questions. i am continuing to get more parts from cpp for my build. just got a 23 hp cam and rev kit from tom and am sending clutch for machining as soon as i get everthing figured out. it seems like the cc in reverse and the polaris we are currently using would be similar in final drive ratio. have used polaris for 4 years with no belt problems. we will be able to use the cart at the track even if it can't start the car. our racing season starts in april here in missouri and we will be running a non-winged and winged series thru-out central mo. should have time to sort out issues by then.thanks again

Re: sprint car starter?
in 2012 we will be at california mo at least one time for sure. we used to race at eldon mo but i don't think that the track will be open next year[2012]. we will be at lamonte mo[10miles west of sedelia mo] on friday nights. our car is black and white #19s. i will include some photos as the build progress's. will check schedule to get links to the tracks we will be at. also at lucas speedway in wheatland mo. there are serveral tracks in the lake area but the lucas track is by far best facility around.-maybe best in US. thanks-more to come

Re: sprint car starter?
I think it can be made to do it, it will be a matter of gearing and enough weight on the back. A healthy 23 vanguard should have enough beans.
The clutches need to work right, CPP is good with them. If they cut those secondary sheaves I would do that, on a yamaha it gives a lower initial gear it really helps with towing from a dead stop....though with a 16hp clone and stock lifted cart with 22s it likes to spin. |
