1986 Club Car CPP big block conversion: pics & questions
Hi: I have been viewing this and other cart forums for the past nine months gathering ideas for a cart project. I recently acquired a 1986 gas Club Car through some trading and decided to take the plunge on a big block project. Not an easy decision because when finished the amount of money put into this cart will exceed the value of any vehicle I currently own.
To begin, they say copying is the sincerest form of flattery, the first picture is the look I'm going for: I really wanted the "street look" and didn't want to lift my cart, but the 18hp Briggs conversion requires it. Hope it turns out. I have ordered the big block kit with high rev. kit, 10-inch ITP SS with 22x11x10 Lawn Pro tires, 4-inch lift kit, and other misc. items from Cart Parts Plus. I have ordered a newly-painted body with head/tail lights installed from Decker's Garage. Hoping to have the project completed by 4th of July. QUESTIONS: 1. What to use for heat blocking/sound dampening material under the rear body? 2. Can the one-piece seat back on the newer Club Car be used on my older cart without major modification (will have three people riding up front often)? 3. How to mount seat belts for front seat? 4. Any recommendations for rear flip-flop seat: steel or aluminum frame better? Heavy Duty springs needed? 5. What to do with the choke hole in cart body (I'm assuming the Briggs does not use it)? 6. Want to paint the canopy and struts black. Will rattle-can job cut it? 7. Shocks are caked with oily dirt but they still rebound good (no bounce). Replace or re-use? 8. Driven clutch power spring necessary with 18hp Briggs? 9. Is the aluminum trim piece that holds the front cowl expensive? The current one is nicked up; I'm leaning towards just polishing and re-using. Other questions to follow. I appreciate any insight/recommendations. Having already spent a lot of money on this project, I'd prefer not to spend anymore than is necessary. At the same time, I believe in doing things right the first time. Thanks for your time. Below are pics of the dismantling. Will post pics of the build. |

Hi. Thanks for the replies. The wheels/tires and engine arrived but the lift kit and driven clutch didn't, so stopped until they arrive. Will post more once the build begins.

Re: 1986 Club Car CPP big block conversion: pics & questions
Driven clutch arrived. Lift kit should be here tomorrow. Hope to start buttoning this thing up soon.
Question: What is the the black "rod" in the 18hp Briggs with the pin through it? From what I have read it, it is the governor or governor-related. All the pictures I have seen on the forums of the 18hp Briggs have this item removed. Should it be removed? If so, how? Thanks Pat |

If it came that way from CPP, I would leave it alone, could ask Tom though. I don't have one on mine.

Dynamat works great and you can find it at the local autoparts store. Cool build! Keep us posted. |

Re: 1986 Club Car CPP big block conversion: pics & questions
Got the lift kit and engine installed. Engine starts right up. Things went relatively smoothly, though someone more mechanically inclined than I could get things done more quickly. Still need to adjust the lift.
Unfortunately, I didn't keep the needed throttle linkage in the black electrical box, so progress came to a halt. Requested the piece on another post. I've decided not to tighten the governor lever, thereby bypassing the governor. I'd appreciate some guidance on how to align the clutches. Also, the front shocks are hashed. Any ideas on replacements? |
