equus digital tach help
I just hooked up an equus digital tach on my briggs 16hp (model 6624). It was brandnew in the package, but i guess this model is discontinued now. so its all hooked up,the pickup is on my sparkplug wire, but when the motor is just running at idle, the tach showes 3500-3800 rpms which is obviously wrong. i cant find anything online about this tach and equus customer service says they dont have any info since its discontinued. does anyone know anything about this model? its model 6624. black, 2 inches around, with a digital diplay. the instructions that came with it are very vague. in the directions it shows a picture of a screwdriver going into the back of the tach where there is an adjustment screw but doesnt say what the screw does.

Re: equus digital tach help
The screw probably sets the tach to the correct number of pulses for the engine that it's hooked up to (4-6-8 or single) Heck, give it a turn and see what happens!

I had this with a clamp on, if it is around any other coil or wires that will affect it and screw it up. |

Re: equus digital tach help
sho, i have the wire running next to all my other wires that go from the engine area, underneath the cart, and up into the dash. so the inductive pickup wire has to be completely alone? that sucks since i spent an hour routing it and tucking it away with all the other wires lol. ill reroute the wire and see what happens. I did try turning that screw in the back of the tach and as far as i can tell, it didnt do anything. its a little white plastic phillips head screw. it turns about 1/4 turn to the left and right.

Re: equus digital tach help
I had that with a clamp on, if I checked a multi cylinder engine for example I had to keep away from other plug wires. I finally got a long plug wire off a V8 and changed the end on it so I could add it to the wire I checked, and get the clamp on tach away from other wires. Then I lost the wire, then the tach stopped working.
It should not be sensitive to normal wires though it might, it is mostly ignition wires and other things that make pulses of power like coils. You could also make sure things are grounded well such as the engine block, to get rid of other electrical noise. |

Re: equus digital tach help
You also have to put it on the wire the right direction for most of them, and you can't have the plug wire curving around right next to it.

Re: equus digital tach help
heres the outcome of the 6624. I tried everything possible to get it to work. I tried the gas line around plug wire trick, made sure the pickup wire was no where near any other wires, tried wrapping steel around the plug wire then clamping the pickup around that, even tried just wrapping the pickup wire directly around the plug wire like the tinytachs instead of using the plastic clamp device, tried adjusting the screw in the back of the tach. Nothing worked. it always read over 3k just idling and was very unstable. I finally talked to someone at equus that knew about this tach, and they told me it definately will not work for a 2 cylinder engine. today i bought an equus 8068 tach from o'reilly auto parts and it works perfect. i DID have to use gas line around the plug wire to tighten up the pickup and get a good reading, but after that, it works awesome. the picture is of the new 8068 with the motor idling. and yes, i know its a little crooked in the picture lol. i fixed that. dont worry.

I'm trying to get my new 8068 working, and so far, nothing. Can you elaborate on the "gas line" trick? Assuming you mean wrapping something over the plug wire to tighten it up in the sensor? Can you post a pic? Also, when you calibrated the tach with the button on the back, did you set the needle at the 500 or 1000 rpm setting? |

Re: equus digital tach help
try just running the wire around the spark plug wire only 1 time, then try 2 wraps...it might be that the tach is just too sensitive for this app...had the same problem with my tiny tach...give that a try and let us know
