Belt tension
When I start putting my big block in next week, can you guys tell me how I need to set it up so the belt tension is correct? I haven't much experience in CVT drives... Thanks!!

The belt doesn't have tension..it is lose, and the clutches *take up* the slack..lol.. you are all over this deal.. It will come together, and make sense..that is why I said just take it easy, don't get mad, it just seems like you're getting ahead of yourself, later, you will kind of be wondering.."why did I ask that about the belt..'' '' The belt fits very lose, in fact most (unless you're name is Essness) you can take off with one hand, just roll them off.. BUT, as soon as that engine hits a certain RPM, the *drive* clutch engages, which grabs the belt..(removes slack) and pulls the driven clutch around. As the torque transfers back, and there is less need for low end, the *load* transfers to the back clutch sort of, and so on.. hope that helps. |

Re: Belt tension
btw, if you are using the cradle from CPP to mount your engine, it will be pretty much set up..
The only time you have to play with belt length and such is if you have a custom cradle, then you might need to worry about belt length and how it acts with the CVT. I used a cradle I bought from someone who had built it, but once I put it in, with a standard 34000 series Briggs Vtwin, the length of belt I needed wasn't what I had..My stock belt wouldn't even go on...it was way too short. None of that happens with the kit. That is why I suggest people use the kit, as it resolves all that stuff... I had to measure, and go buy one or two belts *at fifty bucks a pop* and eventually figured out what size I needed..which was for like an 89 2 stroke marathon..47 .5 inches..and I happened to find a dealer who had one collecting dust in his back shop. |

I understand it just kinda lays there, but you an get it too loose too right guys? They don't make a cradle for a Marathon, hence me asking exactly how to slack the belt correctly. Slow down? I'm so busy at work,I have to be super efficient with my time off. I'm just getting my stuff together, I like being organized and have a game plan when I do start dragging out the welder.

Re: Belt tension
Your belt tension will be determined once you're mounted up and ready to run. If you cant shift when the engine is at idle (about 900 to 1100 rpm), it's too tight.
So, your a little ahead of yourself at this point...... |

Mopar, I planned my big block on no money for about two years it seems..it was a long time, but your belt length is one area, and throttle arrangement, ..a n d... I think that's it. some people have a little issue with brake cable length..I am a cheepo, I just used my old one. I you know..made my exhaust out of pipe for a couple days/weeks until I popped for the stainless header.. It'll be great watching yours come together |

Re: Belt tension
I think the question has some merit, if the belt is too loose the clutch will have to close a lot before moving the belt & consequently it will hook up late. Typically the belt should have about 1-1.5 inch of deflection with 10 pounds pressure. Maybe this is what he is asking?

Re: Belt tension
Slotting the engine cradle is the best thing you can do, there are many other factors that determine where that engine has to sit. A good guess is you need 20 inches center to center minimum...... more if running a remote oil filter.
