Awesome! Broken bolt ;)
That would be sarcasm. Pulling the side cover to take a peek at the bearings, put a new seal in the side cover, etc. this engine hasn't been apart to my knowledge. The last freaggin bolt I removed snapped off while taking it out. Was really in there, eased up on the last few full turns and snapped... Man, my luck... Anybody ever had a side cover bolt break? Shouldn't be very tight at all.

It don't take much, when they feel like that I try to ease them back in and then out a wee bit more then back in and repeat. Drill a small hole in it and drive in a easyout to remove whats left of it and then Chase the threads to clean it up for a new bolt... I think the last guy must have cross threaded it.

Yeah I tried the "tap trick" of going back in. The bolt had a lot of corrosion /white corrosion, not rust. Pisses me off. I have penetrating oil sitting in the cavity. I'll let it sit, drill, and easy out. If the easy out doesn't get it, I'll drill it, tap it, and go on through the other side if worst comes to worst.

I asked if this is common on these I suppose. I appreciate the answer. Tons of corrosion on the threads. Oh well, least the rest are good.

Usually the case threads (softer than bolt) will gauld and build up under the bolt thread and lock it up crossthreaded or not.
No getting around it after that happens and going back in usually just give you false hope before it breaks. |
