Do you really need the heat sheilds?
I have a 23hp vanguard and i was wondering if anyone has taken off the heat sheilds, my motor makes all kind of noise up in the rpms.

Re: Do you really need the heat sheilds?
I've known people to get away without them, but since their purpose is to direct the air across the cooling fins, I would keep them on! I've silenced noisy shields by drilling a small hole in them, and putting a spring to hold the offending part tight against the engine. You can get the springs you'll need at most any hardware store.

Also to help reduce hearing internal engine noise, remove the shields and blower housing and coat the inside with spray can bed liner or body undercoating.
1" foam under seat and inside of body to absorb noise. |

Re: Do you really need the heat sheilds?
Thanks for the comments guys im taking it apart this week for some motor mods I have already thought about using some phenolic washers or somthing like that to space them a little farther from the cylinders the rhino liner seems like a good idea but I don't know if it can handle the heat ill figure somthing out I will post my results.

Re: Do you really need the heat sheilds?
You absolutely want to leave them on..
I take mine off periodically, and the flywheel cover to clean all the fins out, and get any lose twigs, which just attract more lose twigs. Ask a golf course mechanic about those "heat shields" ..they are in no way to shield heat..they keep the motor cool, taking them off permanently is like running your engine in your car without coolant. Letting the fins get full of crap is the same thing. I take mine off about once a month or so..lol. |
