Default Questions on Big Block Swap - 84 Club Car

I just got a club car that doesnt have an engine or clutches with it for $100. I have an electric start 16 hp Briggs engine. This may be a dumb question but can I forgo the starter generator and have the engine run all the time and then just have the clutches for the transaxle drive and to go from forward to reverse?

Thanks,

Wes

Yes,Just eliminate the stock system and rewire the cart for the Briggs.Basically, the start and kill wires to the key-switch(one with Start-Position),and your battery cables.Do keep in mind,The earlier Club-Cars use a reverse-rotation motor,So you will be mounting the motor in the cart backwards and running it in reverse for Forward, forward for Reverse.Alot of people do the same thing so its' not a big deal.Hope this helps.

its the opposite way around, the later carts run reverse rotation. 84-96 carts have motors that run in the same direction as the briggs

I thought they ran them reverse later than that?(I'm not fully up to speed on Club-Cars,I'm into Ez's and Yamis').Its' easy enough to check though, you need to have the Driven-Clutch on the Driver-side of the cart to be standard rotation.

i have the 84-96 rear axle in my ez-go marathon. since the input is on the passanger side the motor is turned 180 degrees as well so it works fine.

Incorrect. All Club Cars to the best of my knowledge have the clutches on the passenger side. In the 96.5 model year the engine switched from CCW rotation to CW but the clutches were still located in the same place.
Early 96 and back Club Cars will be therefore be CCW, the same as your Briggs motor. As to using the starter and generator on the Briggs engine, that depends on the generator output to the battery and what and how you intend to use it. Some folks will just recharge the battery every now and then but others (myself included) have opted to use the CC S/G as both the means to start the engine and supply sufficient current back to the battery to maintain correct charge levels.

FC.

Ok, another stupid question. What clutches can I use on this thing, trying to do this on a tight budget and spending another 500-600 on clutches seems a little crazy. What options do I have?

Thanks

Wes

Oh, and Im not going to use the S/G so will that make a difference in my clutch choice for the engine?

Thanks,

Wes

Assuming your Briggs has a straight 1" shaft, you can buy a shaft adapter from CPP (site sponsor) for under $50. This will allow the use of the standard CC drive clutch with some modifications to the shaft itself. Your rear end I'm assuming is standard CC so the CC driven will work there. Clutches aren't cheap but you might check out the for sale section on this site or perhaps ebay.

Most Briggs Twins have an alternator circuit on them. There will be a voltage regulator mounted on the motor. If it came off anything with electric-start and the battery was not hooked to another source(such as a gas-compressor that the unit is wired to a underhood vehichle battery)Then it will have its' own charging system, therefore you won't have charging issues.Hope this helps.
