Default comet 1190 diagram exploded view

Hey guys, need a lil help here, I took my comet 1190 clutch apart a year ago and now I forget how it goes back together. Can anyone send me in the right dieection? Also, I gummed up the splines. Can I grind the splines off the dirt cover and just use the 3 bolts and crank bolt? Any help will be great. Thanks all!

The "bolts" in the cover are just guide pins, they do nothing to hold the clutch together.

Gummed up the splines meaning? you destroyed them?

The assembly is very simple send me a pic of how it looks now and the pile of parts and I can walk you through it.

Do you have a press? If not what did you use to take it apart?

The "dirt cover" is not just a cover, it' is what makes the clutch function. The arms ride inside the dome and without the splines the whole assembly just spins on the end of the shaft and is worthless.

All I have taken apart is the dust cover , the ramp, a spacer and a snap ring. I am not sure if the ramp goes under the spacer, over the spacer. And both them go under the snap ring. Or. ?? I only have 1 snap ring but there is 2 groves. Did I loose one? All of my rollers and spring are still intact. I didn't touch them. One of my biggest concerns is can I grind the splines off of the dust cover and just use the bolts and engine bolt to hold it on. I messed up the splines on th shaft side side. But could grind the splines off the dust cover if they are not needed. ?????? Thanks

Snap ring, ramp, spacer, Cover

Have fun getting the springs back on the arms after you put the ramp on.

The clutch is adjustable i groove for 1 3/16 and 1 for 1 3/8 if I remember correctly.

The splines have to stay they attache the moveable part of the clutch to the engine.

Without the splines the moveable part of the clutch will just free wheel and do nothing.

Did you grind off the splines to remove the cover?

As long as the splines are still there where the cover sits installed you are good.

Make sure you have the correct cup style washer to hold the cover down.

You may be able to clean up the splines with a file depending on what you did.

Picture would help.

Can't the 3 bolts hold the the cover in place? When I removed it, I had to tap on the shaft part of the clutch and I think it mushroomed the shaft witch made the splines mess up.

The bolts are not bolts. they are guide pins. They hold the cover in line with the moveable sheave, that's all.

The only part that attaches the moveable sheave to the power of the engine are the splines.

You have it assembled with out the cover. It just spins on the shaft yes?

How then is that part going to spin with the engine or grab the belt if it just free wheels along?

If you just mushroomed it, (use a proper press next time or take it somewhere directions are in the manual posted earlier) just take an angle grinder with a flapwheel, 120 grit would work, grind down the mushroomed part only.
Basically just put a bevel around the top, then take a triangle file and straighten out the splines. Should take 30mins tops.

When it is reassembled use a press and the washer that holds it on the shaft. takes 5 seconds and is very easy. any machine shop can do it for for like $5
