Default A belt length question for you Big Blockers

Ok, got my Marathon 18hp Vanny up and going. Pulls fantastic. Starts, idles good, etc. On jack stands and gopro video while I was riding on it... See something kind of interesting going on. Looks like sometimes the belt could go higher on the drive, and /or lower on the driven (once at speed). Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think the belt is a little long. If I push straight down on the top of the belt ( brand new 45"), it probably goes down 2.5"! It would be a heck of a lot easier to put on a shorter belt than redrill the mounts, and reinstall the engine. Is 1.5" slack in the belt about what you experts think is appropriate? Thing runs good , thanks for the help on my entire project.

Not an expert but that is what mine and my three neighbors all look like, stock or BB.

If you get a CV tech roller clutch you can put it as tight as you want..

If it runs fine, leave it...although, I bought several to get the one I wanted.

Yeah, I've got close to 3" of slack if I push straight down on the top part of the belt. It doesn't make it all
The way to the top of the drive pulley or the bottom sheave on the rear. It sure seems like a shorter belt would help. But these CV drives are new to
me! Thanks

3'' sounds like too much to me.

I went to one of the fifteen shops nestled amongst the twenty five golf course communities within ten miles of my house, and found an old belt for some 1948 Golfmaster golf cart or some craxy crap... lol..

actually it was for an 88 ezgo, works perfect.

Yeah, mines for an 88 EzGo too.. I'll remeasure around the outside of the driven, inside of the drive. I think the belt stretched or broke in a bit. Well, more compliant now that it's run, it is loose.. ;( dayco shows a belt .5" shorter and another 3/4" shorter. That's easier than moving the engine!

If, with that much slack it's not going to the bottom of the driven clutch, then sounds like it's too wide

If it is long it will engage part way up the primary when you take off, but they normally do not engage right at the bottom. You will not get the full gear ratios it can do if the belt is wrong size. The primary should get it to the top unless it is too short and all the way inside the secondary, if not then belt is wrong width or clutch is messed up...or you are not running high enough rpm to close it all the way that sometimes happens with governor engines at 3600rpm.

With stock engine long belt would bog on takeoff because it is up the primary more, and in a higher gear. Short belt takes off great but you lose top speed. But with a BB they have enough power they don't bog.
