Default 215 to 250 swap

II found a yamaha 250 engine today, from a 1978 exciter, same engine as the Bravo. In comparing the two engines side to side the crankcase halfs, the rod and the crankshaft are the same. Crank shaft is longer on the clutch side to accommodate the splined snowmobile clutch. I can use my old 215 crank to keep the existing cart clutch. The snowmobile clutch has a red spring in it so I will probably swap that into the stock cart clutch. I see that the ignition plate will swap over thanks to another thread here. The main difference is the jug, piston and ports. The jug slides right on to the 215 crankcase and the piston goes right on to the old rod. Slick upgrade.
I would use the snowmobile crank and clutch assembly but the previous owner replaced the rod bearing, pressed the crank apart ok, replaced the bearing and spacers, only to press the crank back together slightly off center.

Any thoughts about the clutch. Will the 215 clutch hold together or should I rework the crank???

That crank can be trued, http://www.slednutz.com/images/user_upload/allcool.wmv
The sled jug will be ported for higher rpms, you may think about using the sled clutch and
pipe zoom zoom.

Yup, after I sent the post I looked at the crank again. It can be trued no problem. I have the sled pipe which surprisingly enough is almost identical to the cart muffler. I agree, I will use the sled clutch and spring, I will have to shim the secondary clutch since the sled belt is wider than the cart belt. The sled clutch does not have provision for a v belt drive pulley so I will have to do something different for reverse. If I am not using the reverse function of the engine it will be a straight swap, mag plate and all.

The belt should be the same 1 3/16 is what near every sled is and all yamaha golf carts. You don't need to swap the ignition if you don't use reverse. I don't recall what they did with the gen, maybe then figured out how to add a pulley to the sled clutch not sure unless they used the G1 crank in it. If the same you might as well use the 250 top end on the G1. I was told the G1 engine was from early yamaha sled the gp maybe in the late 60/70s. Was told they had up to a 400cc single base on that just different jug/piston on it. I've never found info on sleds that old not sure I ever looked. The ET and EX yamaha from the late 70s up are newer the 250 stayed but larger are all twin cylinders. There is a ET250 same as bravo pretty much, its an enticer 250. IIRC the bravo is actually newer. Finding them sucks but there are some posts here about this stuff, there is also a place that will mod the cylinder and hog the ports all out for you.

Yeah, I meant enticer. The jug on the 250 is of course larger bore, but it is a direct bolt on to the 215 crankcase. The ports are huge.

They would run around 50mph, not bad for a little 250. Yami made some great motors then and reliable as a tank. I'd love to have a 340 in one but not sure how you would do the ignition, they were snappy things.

Since I have parts for both the 215 and the 250 on the bench at the same time I did some comparing. Both heads are identical bolt up and diameter, the 250 head has a different profile and a smaller dome volume.....so, if you wanted to just tweak the 215 a 250 head would bolt on and increase compression.

Oil pump on the 250 is larger and changes output with throttle movement, does not need exhaust back pressure to increase oil.

Crank case halves are the same. Oil pump covers different.
Seals and bearings same
rods same
Cranks interchangeable but clutch must follow crank.
Big end and small end bearings same.
Rod shims same
Jugs bolt pattern same....so you could tune down a 250 to a 215 by swapping jug and piston.
Carbs are different , no reed cage on 250, piston ported engine
Mag plates are physically interchangeable....so if you had a good 215 bottom end you could swap the jug, piston and mag plate from a 250 with a bad crank and make a good 250, unidirectional only. Leave the 215 mag plate in and you have a bi directional 250.

Great info, now if we could only find what sled had a 400cc cylinder lol and put that on there...if there is one. The yamaha sled site says the '77 enticer 250 featured a new compact 250cc engine, so maybe it was only a 250. I'm sure the bravo uses the same engine.

I found an SL292 (or SS292?) single they made early 70s (20hp). Here is a photo:

Yeah the 292 is the same bore as the 250 but longer stroke. 400 in a single is tough to do.
