EZGO, 27in dirt devil tires, Terra Toys lift front and rear, stock air box and clutch...supposedly? high speed gears by previous owner... Can I get 40mph out of it? Current top speed is 31mph.

What's your RPM's at 31mph? You should be easily able to get 35+.

I have a stretch header with the supertrap style muffler, the more I open up the muffler, the higher r's I can get. I have a CV-Tech clutch from CPP and with "normal" tunning, I run right about 36-37 mph at 53 to 5500 rpm. | |

Thanks for the info. I know my exhaust is an issue. It is a custom setup and looks cool from the rear with chrome tip dual exhaust but it is a terrible design. One pipe right off the engine T's 90 degrees into the other pipe before they run out the rear into a large tube where the dual tips come off of. I am pulling that and taking it to a local hot rod exhaust builder. fstg21 is getting the clutch, I think he has one of the Comet ones left over. He knows a lot about these Honda engines. We were debating on just putting a K&N filter on the stock airbox or go to a cone type. We haven't talked about a timing advance key or rev kit. What's involved in that?

Advance you pull the flywheel off and put an offset key in. Most rev kits are some or all the following: valve spring shims, new springs, new stronger pushrods, guideplates, maybe new HD rockers. Most of that can be put on with a spring compressor not a big deal, flywheel puller also not a big deal but some carts you might have to pull the engine to get to it. I get 30gps with my stock G9 with 22s on it, only the airbox is hogged out a little and richer main jet. It takes a while to get up there of course. It must be running around 5K rpm. With a clone 420 in a G9 top speed is about the same, the next one I'll be trying some minor mods to the clone like advanced timing and springs and cut head. The clone I did already has no mods other than larger airbox and exhuast and richer jetting to run with it, and of course no governor on any of them. You should check out your clutch system closely, mark inside them with a sharpie and see if the belt wears it off all the way to top/bottom. Some BB installs they don't get the distance right and you don't get full shifting, or the engine clutch is not right and will not close all the way. At top speed your primary on engine should have the belt right at the top to get your full gearing, and down inside the secondary. Most cart CVT are .9 overdrives, add that to your trans ratio to input into a gearing calculator. This is where a 1190 clutch can go faster because the outer diameter is a little larger than other clutches, it gives a few mph. Anyway, then work on engine mods once you know you have full shifting.

Made a test run tonight. Windy today. Max rpm 3660. Top speed 30.5 mph. I didn't get to test the clutches with the sharpie. I'll do that tomorrow.

You must still have the governor on it? Get a rev kit on there and let it run, you should be around 40 I would guess.

I have a 23hp vanguard and I also run 27" tires stock the motor would turn 3150 and it was running 26-27 floating valves.....I recently did a cam, timing advance key and double valve springs and I haven't put a tach on it again but gps showed 39 and that's with stock gears.

Governor is on it. fstg21 will be back and can get the rpms up to anything that we want. We haven't talked about needing a cam, timing or springs or anything internal to the engine because these Honda's seem to be able to handle up to 5k rpms with no changes. I am really, really interested in what rpms you are running JCribbs when you are going 39mph. Really interested because we have the same size tires and I probably also have stock gears (although the builder said I have high speed which seems impossible now).
