Default Big Block/Clone vs. ATV engine for limo golf cart?

Hi guys. I'm working on a Yamaha G16 4-seater limo that I picked up and it's going to need some valve-train repairs. I might be doing a motor swap sooner than originally planned.

I'm trying to weigh out the differences between going with an ATV engine made for a CVT setup (has the snout on the crank for a drive clutch), or a big block / clone motor. I plan on lifting the cart and putting at least 22" mud tires on it. I may also have plans of a 4WD conversion in the future, which would mean swapping out the stock rear axle for something like a Polaris Sportsman 500 rear end that has the rear differential and transfer case built into one unit, and still uses a driven clutch to turn the differential.

I plan on obviously doing some off-roading with the cart. Maybe not much higher-speed stuff, though it would be nice to be able to hit around 35+ MPH on an open stretch if I wanted. But I mainly want to be sure that I have enough torque for moving this beast slowly over rough terrain and hills, without having to pick up too much speed. I also plan on loading the cart up with up to 4 people, and some camping equipment (tent, big cooler, other camping gear, extra fuel for the cart, etc.). The only thing that I don't care much for so far is the sound of a big block / clone, because most of what I've heard sounds like a lawnmower engine still. I kind of like the sound of an ATV engine better, but that's definitely not an ultimate deciding factor.

Which engine setup do you guys feel I might be better off with for this project based on the uses that I plan? Thanks!!

-Andrew

Just saw this one after posting on your other thread. Do the big block from CPP and never look back. You'll get exactly what you are after and it won't seem to be just barely meeting your requirements but you'll be having a lot of fun with it. Once you get that kind of power you'll find any excuse to play with your cart.

Depends on what you are after, the ATV engine is going to be faster I would guess unless its a small one as most have more HP. They rev all the time and make more noise. The clone is like twice the stock engine, otherwise it is very similar. The V twins make more power and can be built to make even more than that, but cost more of course. They can still act somewhat stock and not have to rev hard all the time.

Hey guys thanks so much for the input. I'm kinda leaning towards the quad engine and driveline for now...V-twins are just looking to costly in the end, and as SHO305 said, most ATV engines make decent power. A lot of them are around 20+ horsepower and they don't really need mods to be able to beat on them some. Still something for me to think about though... I appreciate your help guys!

I had an 01 700 polaris first year out for them, that thing was wicked crazy. It had a little carb. work clutch kit air filter kit and a header. Its weight was about 900lbs I weighed about 300lbs and it would run about 67/68 mph and do wheelie's all day long and with 26" X 12 Mudlites no one wanted to ride behind you because of the rocks and mud it would throw!!!!!! Good luck with what ever you end up doing.

I've been meaning to ask is your cart a factory Limo or has it been stretched by someone.
If it's a factory cart it's a G-20 I would think, mines an 01 factory and it is. Just thought I'd ask.

One of a kind, a vmax4 is it? Now everyone is back to twins.

One of the polaris twins would be cake, but around here cost would be a factor I'd have to pay dearly to get one. I knew a guy with a 700 it was really nice.

Yup, The mighty 4. Very cool powerplant.

Even tripples are gone now. 4 strokes only in anything over two cylinders. Big twins are trouble. Durability is an issue. I wouldn't own anything over 600cc's in a twin.

Come on now, we're putting over 100K on the Harley Davidson engines with no trouble at all. That includes 80 CI and up, 88, 96, 103 and 110.

I wish I had the cash to put one in my cart, I'd do it in a heartbeat!!!!!!! My last bike was an 07 96 CI cam, intake and header made 94hp and 104 Torque.
