Default Adapting for a Tachometer

There have been many inquiries here with requests for help wiring tachometers, myself included. This set me and another member here to thinking about this problem. Firstly, our choice of Tach is extremely limited due to the magneto ignition systems fitted to most of our engines and we both wanted something like this; http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/tachometers.aspx and to that end we came up with a simple to install trigger device that can be adapted to almost any clone, EZ-GO, Club Car etc and will drive most of the tachs with 2 cylinder capability available on the market today. Early testing has worked well but I would like to see if it is worth putting together on a modest scale for the members here. I must stress that this is still a work in progress but if enough people are interested we could provide this either as a complete kit or perhaps just the tach driver to allow for a wider choice.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

FC let's see it. You have my interest. I just have never been able to bring myself to putting one of those tiny tachs on any of my carts. I want to know my RPM at a glance not after staring trying to read. Plus round ones on steering columns are the way it's supposed to be

*i would be first in the queue sir!

Tiny tachs are OK but I want a fast responding, positive instrument, the Vannie has a twelve coil and twelve magnet generator and Westach were really helpful, insisting that a Rotax Ducati tach will work if bridged across the two yellow wires.

If not, then your sender would be wonderful

Cheers

I am going to fire up my engine this weekend after a bunch of mods and will test my CPP tach for the first time. If the inductive pickup doesn't work I will want something.

I'm sure it will be just fine Viper, the only problem is a lack of choice when it comes to style, design and size. I prefer a smaller style since it integrates and matches my fuel and oil gauges. The ability to change the dial color is also a bonus since you can (within reason) match it to different cart color schemes.
Thanks to all who have responded so far. Testing should be completed by this months end and I will be able to provide more details at that point.

You mean like this? I agree. Nothing like the big round tach for these tired old eyes! And yes, FC and I have been working together on this project.

Best regards,

This won't be really welcome news after your kind offere to share your hard work, but when I replaced a gas-guzzling 447 Rotax snowmobile engine with a Vannie, the Tacho became an issue.

As promised I ran a test yesterday after Pete at Westach kindly guided me to connect the Rotax tach I already own, which normally goes onto the grey wire and the other terminal to earth, straight across the two yellow generator wires and it worked fine.

The Westach model to suit the Rotax and Jabiru aircraft engines runs on twelve poles giving six pulses per rev and so does the Rotax branded version.

So an off the shelf solution, that works and available in lots of sizes, is this useful?

I'd like to see what you have going there Kev. It sounds as though you are powering the tach from the alternator/generator ? Diesel engines use that method via a tap into the field coil output to provide a recognizable square wave signal to the tachometer. Would you be kind enough to post pictures of what you have ?
