Default What Clutch for an old buggy

Hey Everyone!

I have an old cart that I have converted to a 16hp clone engine (1” shaft) it used to be electric so I have removed the motor and a 1"shaft with a 6:1 ratio remains. The distance between the shafts is 16”although this can be easily modified. I wanted to buy a clutch setup for it, ie – drive, driven and belt. Would anyone be able to let me know what would work? Cheers!

start here with this sticky http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/big-b...h-options.html

I just helped a good friend replace a gaser with a 16 hp brigs. We used my old Salesbury until his ccp tappered adapter came in. After we insatlled the stock ezgo clutch it did not perfrom as good as my old worn out clutch. We going to put a spring kit in it and hopes it works.

Thanks for your reply Unforgiven. I am having problems finding a driven clutch that will fit the 1" Shaft. I might need to pull it apart and get it on the lathe?

I don't think changing the shaft circumference is going to solve it, I haven't heard of *anyone* just adding a CVT driven side, to an electric axle , but I could be mistaken.

I would bet it will be easier to find an old rear end out of a parts machine
maybe even with a driven clutch attached than to try to turn an electric rear end into a gasser rear end.

heck, I bought one of my carts for 300 or so, and the other for 140...

Find out the gear ratio of the rear. If its not like the gas then you might be better off with a jackshaft like the thread above did, as you can change the ratio to get it right with the jackshaft gearing. CVT usually has a 1:1 or close ratio at top speed, so if your rear has a higher ratio you will never get up to speeds gas carts run. A G9 is about 13:1 in the trans but the G9 CVT is 0.9:1 a small overdrive. Put together it is around 11:1 total ratio at top speed, with 22 tires it makes 30gps on pavement just screaming with no governor at around 5K rpm. CVT of some kind is really the only way as you have no gears and that does it for you. If you go with a gokart clutch you have a clutch to engage and one gear. That works for a light gokart running X mph on a track, but does not work for a golfcart running steady (anywhere in a) 0-30mph range and up hills at any given time with limited power.

No, actually I had not..

even if I had, I still wouldn't do that.. go for it though.. LOL.

You DO realize that cart started one way, and wound up completely different ?
If someone asks a question, I try to answer it with a solution that isn't for two days..

The main problem with a sparky rear end is it is designed for an electric motor (can't believe I am having to explain this)
and the gasser rear is designed for a gas rear end... this has been done, it has been attempted, and it usually turns into a live axle or a gasser rear before it is over.
Thanks for your interest in my reading habits.

Lathing it won't actually help... would it ? If you lathe it, that means you are turning it down.. smaller. Any driven clutch that will withstand 16 hp for any length of time won't be on a smaller than 1'' shaft, if anything.. it would be on a larger shaft.

There aren't many, if any at all, clutches (CVT type) that mount on larger shafts..
This is why I don't recommend using an electric rear and trying to use a gasser front.. LOL, unless you are very adept at modification, and this is something you really live for.. modifying an electric into a gasser.

Your reading habits are of no consequence to me. I merely wished to point out an alternative perspective as experienced by a fellow that is going along a different path. Of course the rear ends of a gas and electric cart are different and I'm not suggesting otherwise . I was just trying to show what can be achieved with some lateral and creative thinking from another member here.
No need to be condescending, I was just acting as a conduit for something I thought might interest and help others.
