honda 24hp oil in exhaust

Uh oh...went for first run in gx670 since governor removal, stretch exhaust, cvtech clutch, GPS speedometers and tach install. Couldn't get tach working properly which is another story. Was also having issues trying to adjust carb but seemed good and went out.

Got to 42 MPH in a quick run of 20 seconds or so and a few other bursts. Stopped and engine started running terrible. Nursed it home. Checked plugs OK. Checked valve lash OK. Was messing with carb settings and seemed to idle fine but saw drips of oil coming out of exhaust.

Head gasket? If yes how hard to fix?

More info...no smoke coming out.

If I replace head gaskets I could use a suggestion on what to do with the heads off. Use same OEM gaskets or high performance?

The stock head gaskets are .010" thk. steel, unless they were improperly torqued, I doubt they are burnt out. You could send one of your old ones to cometic, and they can cut new copper gaskets .005". That is as thin as they make them. We take .020 off the heads with the copper or .025 with the stock gaskets. Porting the heads makes very good power and inexpensive if you can do it yourself, but needs to be done correctly, if your not familiar with head porting, hire it done. Check your PCV hose for oil. Maybe oil passed the PCV and went through the motor at high RPM. With no governor and tach not working, pretty risky.

Be sure you clip the plastic ears on the tach pickup or it will read spotty.

Probably not a gasket, just the PCV pulling oil into the carb from high RPM.

You can change the routing to avoid this.

amen, I am wondering why head gasket too.. oil dripping from the exhaust ?

How old is this engine ?

Thanks guys but I read on these forums about people having problems with the PVC pulling oil into the carb on high speed runs due to the engine baffles so I removed the connection at the carb, inserted a clear fuel filter and another piece of fuel tubing. No oil is getting in the fuel filter. I checked multiple times to ensure the hose is not kinked or anything.

I think head gasket because it was running perfectly one second and then bam...ran like garbage and had to limp home at about 2 mph. I am thinking gasket or valve but something has to be wrong in there and something is causing oil to get into exhaust pipe because it is dripping.

I didn't check spark at both cylinders but would a Honda 24hp v twin idle if one cylinder wasn't running? Could one maybe not be igniting and somehow pushing oil out the exhaust?

On my honda v-twin i had a fouled plug and was running on 1 cylinder..it was sick..hardle drive down the driveway. It would idle for about 10 seconds and die. Found a plug was fouled ,replaced and ran fine. You might check spark and your plugs. A compression test would tell you a lot, if cylinders are balanced, valves ,etc. The camshaft in those are nylon, there are a lot of comments i have heard about craked and stripped gears, where it runs on crankshaft gear .

The only other place I could see it coming from is the exhaust valve guide.

Pull the plugs. Look for oily or black. Replace them even if the look good, but keep track of where they cam from so you can compare. The GX670 tends to run rich on the rear cylinder in carts. From my experience.
