Default Has anyone ever tried machining down your 1 1/8 shaft to a 1"

I have a good deal on a 20hp kohler v twin its a 1 1/8" shaft and I already have a 1" clutch. I know a machine shop could do it but this is a budget build I was thinking motor running and hit it lightly with a grinder and file. Is this just crazy talk? Or do you think it could work?

Won't work,It needs to be machined down. All a file will get you is a ton of metal-filings,a head-ache,sore-arms,and a Out-of Round Crankshaft, that will be worthless.Look into the machining, you may find that someone can do it pretty cheap.See if you can find someone who does Machining at home, you might get it done really cheap(under $50),Its' not complicated or time-consuming.

If you lived closer I would get it done for you, But yes ,it's going to have to be done on a lathe

So, has anyone done this without pulling the crank from the block? I have thought of setting the engine up on the Lathe table, setting up the cutter and starting the engine, if you take .005 at a time it shouldn't hurt the crank bearings, any input?

I have a friend who has done this and it worked well. As you said, light cuts only. After turning the engine went to the Bridgeport to sink the key slot.
