Default Help. Vanguard 18 flooded carb. runs fine when inline fuel valve off

18 hp vanny / v twin. advance timing key, rods, valve springs. (hi rev kit)

Ok, so I took my motor out of my cart to adjust the valves to .004 as it wasn't running right. So I took motor out, made adjustment and also cleaned the carb out. (didn't rebuild, motor only has 40 hours or so) upon removing the carb I broke the gasket that goes on top of the carb. So I got a new OEM gasket and installed it today. The only other thing I did was add a inline fuel shut off valve so I could run the carb dry when it sits.

I am running an electric fuel pump which I have been running for 2 years now. After the fuel pump I have a T which also has a return fuel line to the gas tank.

I put the motor back in and hooked everything up. I fired up the motor up and it took a while to get going but ran ok for about 20 seconds. Then as I floored the gas pedal, fuel sprayed out of the carb (didn't have air cleaner on) and the cart started to die. I turned off the fuel to the carb via the in line fuel valve and once the motor fired it ran great... until it ran out of fuel in the bowl of course.

I took the carb top back off and noticed the float bowl seat wasn't in... so i put it back in and reinstalled float and tried it again....same problem, runs like crap then starts spitting fuel..actually some fuel was coming out the muffler too.

did this about 8 times and it only seems to run good when the fuel is turned off to the carb (revs good, etc)... I tried slightly opening the inline fuel valve but same problem. It's as if it's getting too much fuel. I have some pics attached.. if I am missing something (which is possible, like forgot to put a hose on, put something in carb, etc) Now the float bowl seat doesn't have a rubber o ring or anything does it? now I took the top off the carb, fired cart and pushed down a little on float and it allows fuel in, I let go and it stops fuel..... HELP

here's a video too....
I started with inline fuel valve off

So I am leaving for vacation tomorrow and may have to leave cart at home.

I was just reading somewhere.. is there a right and wrong way to put the metal clip (hook) onto the float? it did fall out and I did put it back in but wouldn't think that would matter but I've been wrong before,

boots is correct BUT you said you broke the gasket when i was getting mine going i could not get it to stay running by chance i left the two screws on the back (top)of the carb loose by accident and it ran fine figured out it was that solinoid on the side of the carb ...any ways long story short replace the top gasket if it is broken it will suck gas out of the bowl through the broken gasket and make it flood like h#LL check the solinoid too....p.s. thats the same carb i have ...

Stupid me.. I decided this morning to look for the old carb gasket to compare thinking there was something different. Well guess what? I put it back on the carb so I didn't loose it and I had the new and the old gasket on. I knew it was something simple....simple and stupid. thanks Cartzilla.

You may need a Pressure-Regulator.Float-Bowl carbs only need 2-3psi,most small electric pumps are 5-7psi.This will cause your flooding.I ran a similar pump on a Turbo-Kawasaki 650 and had to use a regulator on it.The Needle and Seat may be getting weak,or the float was out of adjustment.I learned long-ago to never flip a carb upside-down(you stated you pulled the motor, maybe it got rolled on its side?),many times it results in a stuck float.Hope this helps.
