The torque increase from the V-Twin will make the clutches shift sooner,it will give more speed at the same rpm because of this, not alot, but you will see a difference on GPS.

Just got back with the engine. Will try to post up some pics later as my son has a game this afternoon. Long story short...started first pull cold, paid $300 since he had it all bolted to a homemade generator, tapered shaft (should I be worried?), not one bit of smoke. Gotta run now.

Game cancelled so I got a little bit to post up the pics.

First of all. Thanks for the replies. Trust me when I say I read and re-read them to get a better understanding. I do get the "more torque" aspect vs. the top end. Used to wheel my old CJ-7 in a club years back and played with the steeper gears and larger HP. That said, it was mentioned that gears can be swapped out. If that was an inexpensive change, along with adding a few HP, wouldn't mind doing both. Would like to get it up around 30-40 mph without running it to hard and hot.

Back to the motor I picked up. By the pics you can see the gentleman's generator set-up. Without really knowing I figured that the generator part should be worth at least $50-100. It is a 5000w with a 6250w surge. Wasn't sure about the tapered shaft and he didn't tell me till I got there. He used an adaptor to hook it together. Hopefully that won't be a major issue for me. Read some of the other threads and saw that you can get adaptors or put in new crank and such. Just don't want the prices to get out of hand (wives, as you know, even though we can need them, can be very large pains in the ***).

Got there and engine was stone cold. Did a little choke, little throttle, and started on the first pull. Sounded great. No tapping or anything that seemed amiss. In fact, I think it's gonna sound great in the cart. Ran it for a while then shut it down and fired it up with the starter. Then he put a 6" grinder into the outlet and hit that. Motor never wavered at all (though 16hp is a little large for that generator). No smoke, no leaks that I could see, to me, it looked good. Whatever I get out of the generator part brings the cost of the motor down by that much.

Another question while I'm on. Since my Robin won't be needed anymore, what's a reasonable asking price for Craigslist? Runs great cept I'm sure the carb can be played with or rebuilt. Takes a choke to get her started cold and, unless she's good and warm, got to feather out the pedal a bit at first take off.

If you can get the 16hp for $250, buy it. I paid $350 and think I got a deal. Make sure it has the starter, fuel pump and charging circuit intact. Without the rev kit, mine does about 25mph keeping it under 3000rpm. 35mph should be easy with the kit.
A guy on heymow.com told me a 18hp carb will add 2hp,I don't know but I put one on mine,I did the upgrades you mentioned,it runs good but I didn't run it before so I have nothing to compare it to

It looks like you'll need a fuel pump, relocate the oil filter and keyswitch, and modify the exhaust pipe. The charging circuit seems to be intact as does the starter. Nice find! You'll love it! My 16hp vanguard came out of a cub cadet riding mower. I used the muffler from the mower and it sounds great in the cart.

It doesn't look like a taper shaft to me...but I think you will have to wait till you
get the gen set off to see.

If it is the wrong taper, that will be an obstacle of sorts, depending on your money.

the oil filter is in the wrong place as was said..the belt and clutch will be there.

Nice find for sure.

Hope it works out.

Okay, got the generator head sold off. Made the mistake of telling a guy at work he could have it for $75 w/o knowing what is was worth. Found out I should have doubled that. Oh well, gave my word. Anyway, the shaft wasn't tapered, the shaft on the gen. head was 3/4" so he he used the coupler to link them. After pricing them I think I should be able to get $30ish out of the coupler. That'll knock the price down to 2 bills for the Vanny. Not too bad at all. If someone could give me a reasonable price to ask for the old motor it may work out very well pricewise for me.

Did a search on the forum for "tach" and came up with a LOT of threads. Anyone have one in mind that'll work good with the Vanguard. I read a few threads and really just need someone to point me to a good unit. The one thread that sounded interesting to me was one that involved a Ducati Rotax. But if that isn't viable I will take advice.
