Default Kalamazoo Speed Truck

Hi, I'm new.
I've recentley acquired a Kalamazoo speed truck. It's a 1967, it originally had a kohler magnum 18hp twin with a 3 speed tranny behind it, but the kohler kicked the bucket. I want to repower it with a new engine but i've run into a little problem. The clutch plate is bored for a 1-2 3/8th's tapered shaft and the engine the i have in mind is a 1" keyed straight shaft. I was wondering if there are any adapters out there that i could get my hands on? Any ideas, info and help are greatly apprectiated. Thanks.

I don't understand your measurements..

"The clutch plate is bored for a 1-2 3/8th's tapered shaft and the engine the i have in mind is a 1" keyed straight shaft." ??

Adapters can be made and are made to take a 1'' shaft that is keyed, and make it

into a taper shaft, but not the other way around...so if your taper is suited to the available adapters you could just buy one.

If not, you may have to get one machined, not too hard to do.

Sorry about the confusion, I got a little more educated yesterday, and actually what I was calling the 'clutch plate' is really the fly-wheel end. Yes, the original engine had a tapered shaft that started at 1" and tapered down to 2 3/8". I have not been successfull in finding an adapter for my sort of issue. I seem to keep finding adapters going the other way. Would by chance know of any resources that would have a solution?

I'll have to do that later this evening. This thing has a real transmission with 3 forward gears and reverse, as well as a 7.28 rear end. The book said it has a 2,000 pound payload capacity and supposedly it can tow 20,000 pounds. It's a little out there for what I need but i couldn't beat the price of $375

I think you are looking at it backwards for one..

Your new engine is straight shaft. You could use an adapter to fill in the space
that the old taper shaft motor used to fill.

If it was me, I would load up both engines, and take them to a machine shop.

you'd be surprised how fast an adapter can be made in some instances.

Still the measurement sounds backwards a taper shaft will be say, 1.5 inches
near the engine, then at the end, it might be 1''.

Yours sounds funny for some reason.. BUT the way they actually measure them is the length, and by ratio of the taper.. my example was just to clarify a bit.

If you have your taper shaft in front of you
and the straight shaft , take em to a machinist, tell him what you want, he may ask you to pull the crank out of one of them...which isn't a biggie.

Thanks for the insight, like I said, I'm new, that means to this as a whole. I wasn't able to get pictures last night, I went and looked and my dream home, and ended up going to the realtor's office to put down my offer. So hopefully it'll be tonight. Once again, I appreciate any and all help.

You have a pretty cool looking truck there..cramblit26.

It looks like it had a place to mount a propane canister for a propane engine.

Think maybe when you get time, you could snap a pic or two of the drive train and engine compartment ?

Thanks !
