Engine choice for custom build
Building my first cart, '84 Yamaha G1, and am looking at the Predator 420cc from HF. I just found an 11hp motor out of a 2003 Yamaha with a broken cam shaft that I can pick up pretty cheap. Was wondering which way to go. Any suggestions?
Also, when doing the swap, should I maintain my original motor mounts or can I hard mount the motor to the frame? Lot of great info on this site. Will be pickin' brains as the build goes on. Gray Horse |

Re: Engine choice for custom build
Have to say (now I've never done it), but the "sled engine's" sound like a great match for the G1. With no reverse gears in the transaxle, the 2 cycle sled engines can give 10 times the HP and if wired correctly, you could still have reverse. Seems the biggest problem is alway's the exhaust, they are just so big. Keep us posted on your build.

Re: Engine choice for custom build
Plan on changing out the differential with one that has reverse in it so I can go with a 4 stroke. The Yama motor is a 4 stroke. I've never changed out a cam shaft in this type of motor but I don't think it is that hard a job.
I'll try to get some pics put up. |

Pull the side cover off. Works best to lay on it's side. Lift out cam being carefull not to let the lifters drop out. Put new cam in ,lining up timimg marks on cam and crank put new gasket on, install side cover , reset valves and your done.Honda cams will work ,I believe ARC racing or NR racing might have performance cams for it.

American Power Sports(part of Wiseco) has a bunch of stuff for "Clones" in their Go-Kart catalog.Very reasonable pricing too.

Re: Engine choice for custom build
I've put in two clones one from carolstream and the last one from home depot because it has the vertical airbox you can put a hose on easier. I would get a clone for the extra power around twice what a cart engine makes. Carts are 9hp clone 420 15 but more torque. I can peel the tire in dirt no problem, a 22" tire. If its not lifted then you get lots of power but not speed as they don't rev real high. In fact G1 will rev really high and go faster stock. You can use a bravo sled 250cc. The clone in a lifted cart is cheap, you have to make a mount and all that but once its done they run nice. You can get a lot of parts for clones very few for carts, the ports are tiny in carts. I'm thinking of a cam but will get it running well and broke in first. Still have to get the airbox on this one its got a cut and ported head and springs and timing advance, then I can jet it in.

Re: Engine choice for custom build
Just bought a new Predator 420 for $124.00. Missing the starter and key switch. That doesn't bother me, I'll rig up a starter/gen setup on it. Trying to find a differential w/reverse in it. Had a couple of leads but didn't pan out. Will keep looking, may possibly go with the forward/reverse unit from bmi karts.

Don't know what kind of clutch goes on these, but
the shipping isn't too bad. https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.a...ame=powerTrans has diff lock, and hydraulic brakes, and a 4 wd output shaft.. |
