16hp Vanguard Slow...
I just finished my big block swap into a 94 ezgo. 16hp vanny with a comet 780 clutch, and custom mandrel bent headers. It runs, drives, and sounds cool. BUT its not a lick faster than the 9hp robin was.... It almost seems like im running low rpms... any suggestions to get me a few more mph/rpms? I dont want to go through the motor right now and make it too wild, just any simple tuning tips?

Re: 16hp Vanguard Slow...
Without some mods to the motor it's probably not going to go much faster than stock, the rpms are about the same. You should have more torque with the Vanny and it should get up to speed quicker than the stock motor.
Some of these guys with more xperience should be able to tell you what tp do as far as mods go. I haven't got to the point of doing the swap on mine yet but hopefully soon. |

You will not be truly happy with it until you disable the governor. Just be smart with the gas pedal and install a tach. Here's how I disconnected mine. I loosened up the governor shaft for now. This winter, all the internals are coming out.

Just remember if you remove your governor you will need to make other engine mods to allow the engine to run safely. You will more that likely need a new flywheel, valves, springs, and retainers. I'm not sure on the strength of the connecting rod strength on those motors, but with those engines turning at over 6000 RPMs, stock parts get a little sketchy. Hope that helps.

Re: 16hp Vanguard Slow...
I think the 780 has a 7" diameter, if another clutch is larger it may go faster due to more gearing.....but not sure what difference it makes it can't be that much.
With a vanguard they typically put a rev kit on them that is not very expensive, its pushrods and springs I think. Then they are pretty good up to 6K everyone says. You still have the stock cam that does not pull that well on the top end but you can rev it out for more speed this way with out breaking things. Of course lawn engines are not engineered to run 6K all day, so driver beware. I assume most people don't keep a cart pinned for very long and that is why they don't have problems. If you run roads you should get HS gears for the cart to lower your rpm anyway. Sure you can get many performance parts for them. Get one of those tinytachs or similar, you should easily be able to tweek the governor up to 4K rpm and not hurt anything. Make sure your clutches are shifting out all the way, put marker on the insides and see if the belt wears it off all the way up. If you have the engine the wrong distance from the trans the CVT may not shift all the way out. Depending on your tires, have enough air in the rears to stay close to full diameter. Just be careful some tires don't wear or handle right with too much or too little air in them. You may have to rejet the carb, this can be a pain lol I'm into it with my clone. The moment you increase air flow in the exhaust or airbox you often have to jet it up. I enlarged the main and often that takes care of it, but its still not right at part throttle. Anyway this will affect power mostly not rpm. The epa has made new carbs not very friendly to more than simple jet changes. |
