$500 16 HP Vanguard?
I found a like new 16 HP Briggs Vanguard for $500. Is that a decent price for a used motor? Just started to look for a big block for my cart. Not sure what the going prices are for used motors. Thanks in advance.

Re: $500 16 HP Vanguard?
Yea, not bad at all from what I've seen. And a lot of guys swear thats a good motor. I think I'd do the usual checking on it though.... look at the oil, check the compression, test run it, etc.
Also, get the exact model so you can verify what the crankshaft size is like. Remember your going to need to get a clutch on there. Tom at CartPartsPlus knows a lot about how to make that happen, and he sells an adapter you might need to do it. Good luck getting it. |

To me it depends on how u want your cart, Iv read the 16hp are slow in carts unless u have it built with performance parts ect..... I just bought a 18hp for 300 but its not new so I'd say its a good price

There was a recent 23hp vanguard in the parts section for $450.

Wow, thanks for all the information. Carts Parts Plus is a fantastic site. I can't wait to get started on my cart this winter. Its missing the motor so why not Big Block it. Thanks again.

I put a 16hp Vanguard in my EZGO. More than enough power for what I use it for. Paid $350 for the motor. |

Re: $500 16 HP Vanguard?
As I understand it, any of these big blocks don't make a lot of speed with stock gears if you don't have the rev limiter removed. Loads of bottom end torque, but not so much speed.
Gear up & I imagine thats a lot different story. I know that when the rev limiter is removed, and stock gears, it will turn the RPMs to get the speed up. My own Honda does about 35 mph with just myself on it..... not that I'd do that for very long.... but it has to be exercised once in a while. |

Re: $500 16 HP Vanguard?
So on a side note, when doing a big block swap, it sounds like bottom end torque is gained more so than speed. Is that correct? Yes I know by changing a few things you can get the speed, but just swapping in a big block won't necessarily make it a ton faster.
I'm still doing the research on this type of swap so any thoughts on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks to those who replied to this thread. Bryan |

Yea, thats the point of removing the governor & rev limiter... so you can gain RPMs & speed.
