Default Advance timing key install

Bought the timing advance key at CPP. Now that it is installed the cart doesnt run to well. When you step on the gas it just stalls out. If I mess with the choke it gets better or if I press the pedal slowly it seems to rev ok. Am I missing something? Should I have to change the jets when installing this key?

What cart, what motor, did you put the key in backwards?

It is a club car with a 16 hp briggs model 303447. I put the key in so facing the flywheel it rotated it clockwise.

It usually makes a marginal difference, it just lets it rev a little nicer and might build more torque but not a big difference. You have to advance the flywheel so you have to turn the flywheel the direction it normally rotates while holding the crank still, until the key hits, then tighten it up. This gets the magnet to the coil sooner for more timing advance. An easy way is put the magnet before the coil most engines that is the left side as most are CW rotation on the flywheel side. When you get the key in then turn the flywheel so the magnet is closer to/under the coil.

You are correct. I put the key way in rotated the flywheel cw until it touched then torqued the nut. The cart ran good prior to this, now it just bogs.

Guess I would start by looking for something you could have disturbed while doing the install. Can't see how the key would have done this. How much advance is it?

Wow, lot of advance. Many car type engines run 30-36 full advance but not until over maybe 2500rpm. It can cause a lot of spark knock at low rpm and damage things. however I'm not up on what vanguards run best at. I put a 4 degree key in my clone and cut the head .050, that is about as far as I can go on regular fuel. It will knock if I gas it at near idle rpms under load, but will only do that if I go very slow then gas it hard in hot weather. It takes a moment for the clutch to react and shift down.

I bought this key from CPP. They advertise it as 30*, I asume thats 30 degrees. I thought it was alot too but figured they knew what they were doing. I am sure they do, but I am going to take it out tonight and see what happens.
