Default briggs boring

well I just realized the great deal i got on new pistons for my briggs vtwin come in as .020 oversize instead of std bore , well i had been thinking about going bigger anyways and shaving the heads so it really doesn't matter , what i need to know is what is reasonable price to have a block bored .020 , i know i got shafted last time i had a cylinder bored i took the shop the piston and cylinder on a kf82 and got a 105 dollar bill and im not looking to go with that guy again as he charged me for machine work at a high end racing bike shop. I dont mind paying for quality work but I thought it was a bit overpriced and took over a month for him to get around to it.

What you might do is call the lawn dealers in your area and see if anyone races them, and find the shop that does their engines. So happened a guy I know does them at his shop for a whole team. He did my head in no time (< week) cut and ported it. He charged me 120 and I took a double take at that....but he didn't just clean up the ports he did all of them it looks really nice. I should have been a little more clear I only wanted them cleaned up lol. Anyway this guy also does sleds, any kind of automotive engine, he even did kart engines when he was a kid. If they do lawn engines they will be setup and can do it faster. But aside from an automotive shop or bike/atv dealer I don't know who else has the boring equipment laying around for these. Boring a slant cylinder block like these can also be more hassle to do. I just looked at a set of harley cylinders (old cast iron ones) that were being wire burned out because they bored them crooked, wonder what that will cost. That wire machine is +/-.0002". All else fails just call everyone in your area and get quotes.

Try Lawn & Garden shops,or Automotive Engine Shops. Most Auto-engine places do small engines as well.Around $100 is probably about right. They have to setup, bore, hone to fit,and clean-up after.A couple hours work by the time they are done.Make sure you send the new pistons with the block,so they can properly fit them in the bores.I've seen pistons that were under-sized and over-sized,even though they are marked .020,they could be .021,or .019.Hope this helps.

The "Hand-Tool" most guys use is actually a flexible-hone(like a wheel-cylinder hone but bigger).Alot of guys use it,I've done it too.The only downfall is that it is a flexible-hone,not a boring-bar.Boring-Bars are setup on center and cut a dimensionally-square bore,A Flex-Hone will cut the bore, but any taper or egg-shape distortion will still be there in the over-bore,since it flexes to follow the bore.If you check the bore for taper and its' square in both directions, then the hone will be fine.I'd hate to see someone ruin a good block.Hope this helps.

yeah I have a brand new Hone sitting here but to go .020 is just to much and with the way this is being built I am not going to cheap out and end up twisty pistons in a crooked bore.

Im expecting to get to the 25+ hp mark on a briggs 16hp 303447 engine and hp cost money. I found a local shop from what i found their the only shop anyone around here knows of so im probably going to send it out tommorow or monday.
Once i get it back from them I'm considering starting a engine build thread for documentation of the engine build, I have not seen one on here so im going to give it a try.

You definitely don't want to hone .020"!

I've got the same motor in my cart. This is what I'm doing to mine. With a few other mods, 25hp is easily in sight.

Im planning on almost the same mods but with a few tweaks, and strangely enough i found a programmable fuel injection system for this engine for 400 i don't know if im gonna do it but man it would be awesome to really be able to tweak the spark and fuel map for max hp or even a turbo setup

the tool i was talking about was a adjustable ream. then you come in with a hone. I bored my briggs .060 over. This was a single cylinder not a twin

Just take it to an Auto machine shop. Most small engine shops will just take it there anyway, and it will cost you more. It's not worth the cost of eguipment to have around for lawn mower repairs.Unless you have a small engine race shop close by then bypass the lawn shops.
