Default 18hp vs 23hp Vanguard from CPP

Ok....which one would be best to get...the 18hp or 23hp. I spoke with Tom at CPP and he said that the 18hp is less tempermental. I am looking for comments from those people that have installed this kit.

Please let me know your thoughts!

When I upgraded I got the 23 with the cam and rev kit because I didn't want to get the 18 and then say "what if I'd got the 23". It has lots of torque and the installation was easy.

That's purdy Dave. And I agree, if you buy the 18, you'll always be second guessing yourself.

Thanks, Chris. There will always be something faster and quicker, but this is fine for me. It makes me grin

I put a 18 in mine. i did not get it from ccp i traded for it. wish i could drive a 23 hp to compare but the power will be so much more than stock i do not beleive you will be dissapointed with either. I put in the clone 16 in before the vanguard and that is even so much better than stock but when i went to the vanguard it only got better. i will only try to do a vanguard if i ever need to do another. pull the trigger you will not be disappointed with the 18 or the 23

Most say the 18 works quiet well, not sure anyone has actually raced or directly compared them. I have heard of 18s beating 23s in races but hard to say how they were setup. It may be more a matter of your funding options lol. The 18 will be a LOT more power than stock, have no doubt about that. My clone feels like double the power it will set you back in the seat on takeoff, and those are 15hp. I have put two in.

I have the 18 kit from CPP and it has plenty of power for a stock motor. I'm about to install the rev kit and thinner head gaskets so I can bypass the governor. From what I've been told, if you are willing to modify the engine you can get more out of the 18. I would be interested to see to comparably modified engines inequal carts run against each other. Axle gearing, tire size, weight of cart with occupants, terrain, and even weather will influence performance, so it's difficult to say which engine performs the best. Maybe a comparison could be done at a CAW event.

In the end, I pulled the trigger on the 23 (arrived yesterday...still in the box!). I'm a numbers guy, and when deciding to take the plunge, I couldn't ignore the specs. The increases of 5hp (28% over the 1 & 9.6in of torque (25% over the 1 were well worth the extra $250.

All said and done (no rev or cam factored in...same price for each engine)...

18 van:
$128 per hp
$80 per in torque

23 van:
$111 per hp
$67 per in torque

The upgrade gives cheap raw power vs spending time/dough on perf upgrades....BUT, I was ready to go on the 18. I just couldn't handle the 'what if'.....
