Throttling off of Governor Arm
Hey guys what are your thoughts about using the governor arm to attach the throttle linkage to? The throttle cable that i have doesnt have enough cable movement to get a full throttle effect out of the engine when the accel pedal is to the floor and the other end is attached to the throttle arm on the motor.
I am installing a 13hp Briggs motor into my 92 EzGO. Let me know your thoughts so that i can continue forward. |

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
When I did my Opposed Briggs on the Marathon,I tried using the govenor linkage, but it wasn't cooperating.I built a bell-crank from the parts to connect to the throttle-arm on the carb, but then When I hooked the cable, the carb had 1/2" throw, and the stock cable had about 1-1/2" throw.I ended up redrilling the lever down at the frame where the cable connects to the pedal-linkage and relocating the cable closer to the pivot to shorten the throw.I know the Vannie is setup different, but there are alot of ways to do it.Keep in mind,if you hook to the govenor-arm,but haven't disabled the internals of the govenor, its' going to try to work. There are a bunch of pics/descriptions in the Big-Block section.Hope this helps.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
Mine is attached thru the governor and I'm not really happy with it. It does seem like it's holding me back. Maybe drilling out the hole in the governor arm will help, I'm not sure.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
Like I stated earlier,if you haven't disabled the govenor internally,it will still work as it is supposed to.You can remove the govenor, but retain the linkage,if you want to use it.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
im not so sure i want to take the governor off just yet. might see how she runs with it on and then decide. The only thing stopping me from the initial ride is the dang throttle linkage. As soon as i figure that out im up and running.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
The govenor can be a 2-edged sword. It limits speed, but also adds power under load. Most eliminate it.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
Im just worried that if i eliminate it, what are the chances of it going BOOM with stock internals?

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
It depends on how hard you run it,and for how long.Quick blasts don't do damage, sustained high rpm does.We run our ungoverned, but we have run these motors for so long, that we have a feel, and an ear for them.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
Sorry--I was confused CPP utilizes the cart gov and 2 cables. I think the cart gov is still limiting my speed to some degree.

Re: Throttling off of Governor Arm
Most engines you can put better valve springs in, or shim them, some you need better pushrods (vanguard rev kit). Then you can run them till they lose power because the stock cams just don't rev very high. So if you don't hold them WOT for very long or down a big hill (so they can rev really high) you should be fine. Most only pull to 5K rpm or so. If you want to keep a governor you would be better to use the cart governor, only issue is they develop a lot of pressure at higher speeds (say if you set it to 25mph with 22s). You would have to get in the trans and lighten the weights. Otherwise it trashes the throttle cable at some point and could wear out the governor.
However you should be able to adjust or get a spring for the engine governor and get it up to say 4K rpm (3600 is stock) and be ok. Other thing to think about is many cart clutches shift around 3600-4K. You clutch must shift lower than your governor rpm or you are not getting full power! Your governor should only kick in on the engine when you shift all the way out and get to max speed. With a yamaha on 22s around 25mph or more. You will hear the rpm start to climb. |
