Question Lack of torque w/ high speed gear ?

I understand the whole losing low end torque when you move to a higher geared rear end, however , I have a kohler 20 vtwin in my 86 cc and wondering if the lack of torque would be that substantial even with a big block. I am currently running on the stock rear end. I do a lot of slower trail riding , and the cart powers through the trails without any struggle, but , I am also last in line on the hard road. Is there a happy medium ? Anyone with actual experience in this field ?

Not sure what size tires you run, but there is a lot of play between torque and top speed when dealing with tires size.

I would not be very worried about it with a BB. Can you get a cut sheave on those? That gives you some lower gearing for takeoff, I would think the only possible problem area. I put gears in a stock CC, an old flathead. It would run 28gps (all stock but for the gears and cranking the governor up to the limiter) hitting the limiter. It seemed to take off ok, and I could spin the tire on grass at about 10-15mph as it seemed to have a good midrange pull there. All I had to do is turn right a little and gas it then go straight. It actually felt more powerful after the HS gears were in.

Ago , I can't break the tires on grass let alone pavement , but seems like
I could pull a small house off it's foundation ! WIT I'm at 18 mph on the gps. I'm not looking to take a 5.0 off the line or anything , but if I could reach high 20's to 30 , and still have some low end ,I would be ecstatic !

22s and you only get 18mph? Are you sure the belt is all the way to the top of the primary? (at high speeds) Do you have the stock engine governor on it? Some clutches will not shift all the way at the usual 3600 rpm of a governor, you need to jack it up some or mod the clutch. I would check this stuff out before making gear changes, or you will still have problems after gears.

You think that's bad. I was only getting 7mph on gps with stock gears 24" tires. Turned out the fuel pump was bad that's why I couldn't rev it.
