Reverse idea for everybody
Now I have not tryed this yet but I will let everyone know how it works out. My idea is to rig a platform behind the rear differential with an electric DC motor, I will be using the 0.9 HP used for starting the original two stroke engine. Using that with a seperate belt and pulley system hooked up to the differential. Now this is not going to haul @ss in reverse but if I pull up to a building or parking in the garage it will be able to back me out. May not work so well in a mudhole but... see attached pic. (Ignore the red arrow pointing to the differential)
Throw me ideas if you have them, dont be afraid to tell me what you think. |

Re: Reverse idea for everybody
That is a good idea actually. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Re: Reverse idea for everybody
At first i thought "you will blow the starter gen because they arent designed for continious duty, but thats just it, your using it for just short burst". so yea, give it a try, and see how it goes. Just be aware that if you weld some type of pully on the rear, that thing gets spinnin pretty fast when your rippin away in foward.
This ideal has actualy come up myself, for a project that me and some of my friends are working on. I dont know if you have ever heard about it; putting in a GSXR1000 into a smart car. My friends and i in our free time ;"if any we have", have designed up the bolt in rear carrage for fitting in the motor which is very similar to the one that is already made in europe. Its kinda a school project/wanna be the fastest car in town.. kinda thing also check out http://www.smartuki.com/ As you must know, motorcycles dont have reverse. Now the expensive fancy kits which retial for almost $11,000 here in north america. for the rear carrage and reverse kit. Which is a special helical gear system that gives you reverse in your foward gears. thing is, this is way tooo expensive just for reverse. so we have come up with a small DC reverse drive system on a one way clutch bearing, that will give you a variable reverse speed so you dont smash into a car backing up in a parking lot. But will still let you blow off any mustang, corvette, or ricer at the light. Btw. a gsxr with a turbo kit will give you upwards of 300hp+.. that coupled in the smart, = alot of fun in your sleeper eco-car I was going to put the gsxr into one of the carts i had destined for it here. but the smart, is more smart for me. Its practical for going to school and work, and out with a friend, and racing all your other friends and winning. |

Re: Reverse idea for everybody
You need some kinda separation that will not spin the reverse pulley in forward like the centrifugal teeth in a pull starter rewind mechanism? Or am I way too slow for this smart project? LOL

Think of it this way. i dont know if you do RC monster trucks. if you do you will probably know what im talking about. in the Traxxas T-maxx, that monster truck has a onboard electric starter. Now to start it it has a one way bearing that will grip when the starter motor goes foward, but once the main motor starts, it doesnt grip no more. and the starter motor doesnt spin. it has little mini bearing rods inside that grip the shaft. kinda like this but other types of hd oneways look kinda like this the teeth pop out when the outside is spun. SO yes. its almost like a pull start on a gas mower engine |

Re: Reverse idea for everybody
another thought is to find a way to put the pulley on the inside. If you think about it a generator/ starter motor spins at all times a motor is running. so longevity shouldn't be a issue.
I have thought about a normal car starter engaging a small flywheel for reverse. this way everything is disengaged when you hit the gas. use a normal car rearend like a suzuki sammy rear end. it is narrow enough. |
