Larger oil cooler
Since i've removed the governor, upgraded the springs and had a damaged stock oil cooler. I've decided to upgrade the cooler on my 24hp honda while i'm at it. The one i had in the shed was about 4 times the size of the stock version. It'll be my first time changing an oil cooler on any engine. It obviously increases the oil capacity, so i filled the engine to stock capacity, then filled the oil cooler to its capacity.. lots of bubbles and i think the lines are filled too.. It took 1.9 liters in the engine plus 2 l in the oil cooler and lines. I haven't run the engine yet.. but it seems to me like this is a ton of oil.. is this the correct way to add oil for this upgrade??
thanks |

Pic of the cooler and its mounting position, looking from the back of the cart.

Keep an eye on your oil pressure.

Re: Larger oil cooler
More oil is good, cooler oil is good too considering the temps there. You want to make sure you don't get a leak, use good hose and fittings. If you clamp at least double clamp. I have a commercial mower and it has hydraulic hoses on it, actually if your cooler has the fittings they are pretty reasonable here. They will custom make them for farm equipment and snow plows, commercial stuff, and they take some abuse. Another thing you can do is get a remote oil filter my mower also has that. Of course you can put a V8 or even diesel (or a double filter) filter mount on it to hold even more oil if you want to. NAPA used to have those parts, sure someone does if you need them. They use them on some boats too.

Re: Larger oil cooler
Thanks for the responses. I couldn't get the oil level to remain consistent, I was getting oil in the breather tube. I switched back to a stock oil cooler but added an electric fan between the engine and fan to help push air trough. We'll see how that works.
