Default 23 vanny sounds like a sewing machine

Hi I have just completed a 23 vanguard swap into an electric g19. I fabbed my own motor mount, exhaust, throttle bellcrank, installed a gasser rear axle and a cv tech clutch from tom. The motor I got from a go devil that got the prop and drive damaged with low hrs but motor sat outside for a bit and when I removed the gov and installed rev kit I did notice a bit of surface rust in one cylinder. I have ran it for a few hrs but it just makes a lot of motor noise like a sewing machine seems to b comming right from the cam area. Today I pulled the crankcase cover and all looks good oil is clean no metallics. Rods are tight piston skirts are good. I thought maby the decomp on the cam was sticking but all looks like new. Any ideas on what to check? Does the valve spring spacers cause more noise? I don't know what else to do but it sounds like hell especially at idle or low rpms.

Ok when I would slowly in turn it over by hand I can hear the click noise it seems right when the decomp balls bump the rockers open I wonder if the stiffer springs mess with it once its running putting too much pressure on the decomp causing it to not release? Mine idles strangly sometimes it does sometimes not and it pops out the muffler only at idle leading me to believe comp is low then

The mechanism inside the cam that releases the decompression balls has to go over center. Increased spring pressure will make that a little harder to happen. Also, when the balls are still engaged, the higher spring pressure will add to the noise when the balls hit the tappet. You can remove the entire mechanism, but you need to install(press) a tube into the cam so that oil can get to both end journals. The tube blocks off the holes where the balls were.

Also, look at the back of the cam gear and make sure the roll pin is not sticking out any further than the surface of the flyweight. This will cause it to hit the outside of the #2 cylinder.

Ok I can make a tube to press in to block off the holes where the balls were I have aalready removed the guts from the cam. I am wondering if the spring and large ball need to be reinstalled as well as it looks like it keeps the cam pushed to the flywheel side of the case

Yes, leave the spring and ball in the end of the cam. Make a hollow tube that can go inside the cam all the way to the back side of the spring. Without the tube, you won't have oil to the other end of the cam.

Ok so I made the parts and got the cam back in with no decomp or gov parts what so ever. I set the valves to .004" again and still the same ticking sound at low rpms. Maby it is suppost to sound like this?

If it has high hours (3000 +) it might be the timing gear key.

Just an idea but make sure you check anything on the engine mount. My clone was making a rocker/valve type noise and found my generator was loose at the long pivot bolt. It would go away mostly at higher rpm when the engine smoothed out. The single shakes fair amount at low rpm. I tightened it up and it was much better but doing it again some, found the tube in the bracket is loose so the whole bolt is moving....going to take it off and weld it up.

Try using a listening device to locate the noise if you have not already.
