Default Need help with a Vanguard build

I just purchased a used vanguard 18hp that is in good working cond. and was in my buddies precedent. I ordered a high rev kit, a cam out of a 23hp, and timing advance key. I have a few questions before I tear into the motor.
1: Should I remove the governor from the block and the weights from the cam or is it better to just disconnect the governor arm from the throttle linkage and leave all componets in place.
2: when I install the cam do I line up the timing marks or advance the cam a tooth?
3: What will I need to do to the carb jets for the best performance or is stock carb. ok
4: is there anything else yall recommend doing while I am in there?

By the way this is going in a 2000 cc ds with a long travel kit.

Thanks

If you are going to disable the govenor, remove all the parts and plug the hole in the cover. Also, install the larger pushrods.

I have a 23hp cam in my 16hp Vanny. I tried it straight up, and advanced one tooth. It works better straight up. The 16hp cam works better when it is advanced one tooth. Advancing the cam one tooth moves the powerband down in rpms. Advancing moves the powerband up.

You won't know what is needed for the carb until you can get it running and read the plugs. I went with a 2-barrel carb/intake setup.

Here is a link to my build if you are looking for ideas.

You can find the 2-bbl carbs easily on ebay. Get the one with the black plastic emulsion tube so you can install an adjustable needle. That way you don't need to keep trying different main jets. Just dial it in. Don't pay any more than $40 for the carb. There are alot of them available. The trick is to find a used 2-bbl intake manifold. I paid $50 for mine, but they are still available new for around $100. Major gain in performance.

just pulled the flywheel and found about three of the magnets are gone and it looks like they tore up the stator when they came off, does anyone have a used flywheel and stator for sale? or know a place to get one?

23hp cam in an 18hp vanny? Did you remove the governor weights? Is the decompression mechanism still on the cam?

yes it is a 23hp cam in a 18hp vanny. I have not removed the weights yet but I was planning to if it is the right thing to do. same goes for the decompression mechanism. I have never built one of these motors before so I am trying to learn as much as I can and do it right

Take the governor weights off if you are disabling the governor. Leave the decompression mechanism intact. Make sure the roll pin is not sticking out any further than the height of the decompression flyweight. Add a drop of green loctite to hold it in. Just lube the cam and journals with regular oil and run it. Install the cam straight up(timing marks lined up).
