Default Ebay Electric start conversion kit for gx240

I received this kit in yesterday and after looking at many posts on here about charging, im still confused. The seller I bought it from said I do not need a rectifier that it charges through the starting solenoid. What he said just doesn't make sense to me. I took the ignition box apart and installed the ignition switch in the factory hole in my dash, along with the little circuit breaker. I did not see a rectifier in this box. Is there a chance it is built in the ignition switch, it is a decent size black box. The seller also said he runs these on elec start generators and it charges the battery on those. I just don't want to do any damage to my battery. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

Is it a 3 amp? if so there should be just a diode in the wire it will probably jut look like a hump. If it is bigger than 3 amps I think it would have a rectifier

So do I need a rectifier or just hook it up the way it is? Thx

It will make AC voltage you will see it if you test while running. The larger clones some put the diode in the key switch box along with the breaker. If the charging circuit shorts the breaker goes off. You must have a diode to make it DC, diode is just a one way valve for electricity so it will let only positive through (or negative depending on polarity). No VR because 3A will not overcharge battery, with any use 4A will not either. On the other hand 4A charge in a golf cart with elec start some people have to charge them here and there or they go dead, it depends on how long you run them at a time as it takes a while to make enough charge to offset draw of the starter. Diode must be between the charge coil and where it goes into 12v.

Do you have a link for where I can buy one of these diodes? So just wire it inline between the coil and start box?

Thx

Your photo shows the diode as a small metal box. Mine has one bolted to the block near the oil sensor. This works fine as the diode only need 'ground' the 12v wires the coil is connected to, its 'grounding' only the negative AC pulses in effect.

The diode is NOT wired to the oil sensor as in his pic, the oil sensor is wired to the 'off' on the key along with the kill wire from the ignition coil/magneto....I just looked at the diagram in my clone manual. Don't hook this up wrong you can fry things. The kill wire grounds to kill the ignition, 12v can fry it. The charge coil goes to the diode, then the key, where the 12v at the solenoid is also connected at key. So it goes charge coil to diode to key and on to 12v at solenoid. The magneto goes to the key kill position that is grounded when off (usually grounds to the key box), and the oil sensor also hooks to this.

Thumbs up Re: Ebay Electric start conversion kit for gx240

It shows in the parts diagram for my motor that the little metal box is part of the low oil sensor, not a diode for the charging system. I just looked again at the wires coming out of the starting box and I found the diode. At first I thought it was a barrel connector that was heat shrinked. Its a yellow wire that turns into the brown wire with the diode connecting the two. Thanks for everyone's help!

That is a diode, makes sense it would be attached to the coil (or can be grounded). I can see it in the pic too. I have a 420 clone the diode might be different come to think of it. I looked at mine but could not tell the wires are all bundled and covered with tubing.
