18HP Vanguard in Club Car XRT - slow! Help?
I've just put an 18hp Vanguard in a Club Car XRT950 that originally had a 13hp Vanguard. The new engine is NEW from air cleaner down. The old engine had about 5000 (yes 5000) hours. Everything is all stock. I'm not expecting a race car, this is still a work vehicle. But the engine at WOT seems to be just a little above idle and goes 9-10mph on my GPS. It runs great, just doesn't rev up or go fast. Pretty sure the old engine would do 15 mph.
When I take the air cleaner off and look down the carb while a helper pushes the pedal, the throttle blade opens all the way. Is this a governor thing? What do I do now? Like I said, I don't need a race car. I'd like it to go just as fast as stock, while not having to work quite as hard. Thanks! kevin |

Why would the governor restrict me to near-idle speed? If it'd run to the usual stock speed (3650?), I'd be happy as a pig!

Check it with a tach or timing light.

your doing more than idling going 9-10 mph..... the governer is set to specifacation and thats not always 3650 rpm.

Does anyone have a photo of the governor spring hookups? I sent my question to Al at Performance V-twins and he replied,

Re: 18HP Vanguard in Club Car XRT - slow! Help?
Its hard to tell on a forum a lot of times what is going on..
to me Vanguards are pretty unmistakable when they have adequate *rev* going on.. Have you watched or checked to make sure your belt is behaving correctly, I had one rigged when I did my first big block, and I had the engine going pretty fast I thought, but the cart wouldn't go.. I had the wrong belt setup ..etc. After a while, you are going to want to dump that internal governor, and plug the hole, you may as well consider it now... It won't hurt the motor, you can easily adjust what you want then. The only prohibitive thing might be if a kid is going to be on it...In which case, big blocks aren't really the cart they need to be on. I am just saying it is entirely possible to have one not engaging properly and the governor not playing along either, so you have to isolate one or the other. If you're sure you're belt is right and engaging properly, governor setups are always best set by the book, and go from there. Seems like the Briggs manual has that in it if I recall correctly. Hope that helps some. |
