EZGO engine situation
I have a 1988 EZGO marathon and I need to replace the clutch. I figured down the road I planned on switching out engines. So I was thinking that if im planning on changing. Why buy a new clutch. Should I do an engine swap (if so what should I use) or do I keep the 2 cycle engine in it now. I would like more hp/speed but also would want to keep control. Is it possible to upgrade the stock engine to have faster speed without over revving it?

Re: EZGO engine situation
If you're cart is a 2 stroke, then the trans/axle doesn't have reverse. For reverse, your engine actually runs backwards. So if you do an engine swap, you'll lose reverse. If you want reverse you'll need a 4 stroke model axle from the same golf cart type.

My golf cart does have reverse on it. So does that mean my engine runs backwards?

Basically yes. I don't know what you want as far as speed, but there are options for that motor.

I mainly want it with the acceleration and however fast I can get that motor to go while being able to control it

Re: EZGO engine situation
You'll be limited with how much power you can make with that engine. You can make improvements, but it won't be tire peeling power.
Bigger carb for sure. Shave the head for more compression. Gasket match the intake and exhaust. Mild port on the intake, port and polish the exhaust. That will get you some more power and speed. But again, that engine isn't made for making big power. |

What about a clutch spring and gear ratio? Would that make any difference as well?

Re: EZGO engine situation
That won't make any difference with engine power, but it will keep the rpm in "low gear" longer to make towing and climbing hills easier.

What does changing the high gear in the gears do?
