Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
So today I went out and played for a couple hours on the hills, had a blast.
On the next to last time i started the engine, I noticed that it started a bit rough, almost like the battery was dyeing. Thought nothing of it. when i stopped it so i could put my son in the truck, it didnt start at all anymore. Ended up having to jump start it. got home, pulled the wires off, cleaned them again, even though they were clean. The battery had 12v but when i pushed the start button it went down to like 4v charged the battery up with a battery charger, started the engine & decided to put my multimeter on the battery, 12.8v, accelerated the engine & absolutely no change in voltage. I checked the voltage on the output from the engine and it was under 1 volt, about .8v do you guys have any suggestions? man i'd really hate to have to take the engine out again... it was a PITA to get it in and get it right....... |

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
How did you check the voltage coming out of the motor?

I checked once with the fuse on, but that was just giving me the voltage from the battery. Then I pulled the fuse and checked. .8v at idle a tad over 1v under high acceleration.

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
If the output of the regulator is not connected to a battery with at least 5volts, it will not produce a charge. Did I ever send you the Briggs manual that outlines how to check the charging circuit?

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
Check your grounds. At the very least there has to be a good one from batt to engine.

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
the ground is from the battery directly to the engine block...

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
ok, so per the manual's instructions i checked the voltage before the regulator @ V AC and at 3600 (hell it might've been 8000rpm, i dont know, lol) it gave me 20VAC output.
so the power is there. from what i'm gathering i'm guessing that the regulator is no good. |

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
now the question is, do i buy a direct OEM replacement.. or are there better higher output options that you guys could recommend. currently i have no accessories, but in time i do foresee some high output LED lights being hooked up...

Re: Vanguard 16hp Not Charging
Make sure there is a good connection from the regulator, through the fuse, to the battery. Also a good ground from battery to motor.
