Default 18hp Vanuard Please help

I have a 18hp Vanguard that I installed a 23hp cam, high rev kit from cpp, timing advance key, and stainless header and aftermarket air filter. It is installed in a cc ds. I cannot get it to run right. It is running very rich and loads up. so far I have replaced the entire carb with a brand new one, also have turned mixture screw all the way in and started at 1/4 turn increments all the way out to about 8 turns and the symptoms barely change. I also installed new plugs as old ones were fouled and came out wet. I am very frustrated at this point and am turning to the pros for advice. I am very mechanically inclined and pretty good at tuning v8's but this thing has me baffled. not sure if I have a timing problem, a spark problem, a fuel problem, or a combination of several problems. Please help.

Do you have good spark on both coils? When you installed the timing key, did you install it the correct direction? What plugs are you running? Is the choke staying open while running? If you don't tie it open, it will close when you apply thottle.

don't have any idea how to measure the spark output on the coils. Never thought about the timing key having to be installed a certain way. If it was in the instructions I would of installed that way but I cant recall what they said or which direction I installed it? I am running Champion RC12YC gapped to 32. I have a stiff spring on the choke to hold it open and verified it is not closing.
Thank you for the quick response and all your help so far.

The key must be inserted into the crank so that the 1/2-key portion is on the right-hand side when viewing the crank from the flywheel side. Once you place the flywheel on the crank/key, rotate the flywheel clockwise slightly, so the left side of the keyway is in contact with the left side of the 1/2-key. I drive a shim into the other side of the keyway so it can't move when torquing the flywheel.

As for the coils, just check spark on the plugs while cranking the motor.

I will have to see if I can get to it in the cart if not I will have to pull motor to inspect. Not sure I understand where you are using the shim? Do you happen to know the torque spec of the flywheel.

Another question do you have to adjust the gap between the coils and flywheel so they spark correctly?
