Default Vanguard 23 - Throttle set screw?

I got my new 23 from CPP with the extra goodies. My brother's Honda Vtwin has a throttle set screw. He can actually dial exactly where he wants to set the rpms without using the rear end governor. Is there a way to add a throttle set screw on the vanguard? Tom says to not run the motor over 5500. I don't want to damage the motor. I would like to set a throttle screw right at 5500 if possible. You guys have any experience with this? Thanks

Also, what RPMs do you guys turn your 23s?

Adding a screw to the throttle will only limit the rpm for a certain load condition. If you set it to limit to 5500 under a load, it will be able to over-rev when the load is diminished, or going downhill. Does the motor have a governor on it now?

I didn't think the motor came with a governor. I ordered it from Tom at CPP with rev kit and pro cam if that tells you any more.

The only way to truly limit the max rpm is with a governor. If automatically adjusts to keep the rpms limited. You could install a screw to limit the rpms under no-load conditions, but drivability would be poor under load. If the load was the same all the ime, it wouldn't be an issue.

I just want to make sure i don't hurt the motor. I like the performance without the governor hooked up. What RPMs are people running without hurting these motors. And, will the motor run high enough rpms to do damage with a load?

Do you know if you have the larger billet pushrods?

I've got a slightly modified 16hp Vanguard, and I have had it to 7000rpm many times.

Keep the oil changed, the valves adjusted properly, and you'll be fine. It's a very reliable motor.

If you don't have one, get yourself a tach.

I am not sure about the push rods. But I am glad to hear that you have had yours that high without problems. I really don't plan on running it that hard, but I just wanted to make sure that if i went over 5500, the motor wouldn't grenade on me.

Have you seen my avatar pic? If that doesn't grenade this motor, I don't know what will.

I do have a cheap tiny tach knock off. Only thing is, it has about a 1 second delay.
