35HP Vanguard with DIY Mods.
Hi Guys, I've been using this forum for alot of research regarding my 35 HP Vanguard engine. Only other sites that use this type of engine are Mud boats, 6x6, and Race lawn Mowers. But you guys seem to be more in the line of what my use of it is for.
I don't have a Club Car so hopefully I won't be shunned off the site. Im on a Minibuggy site but there aren't many guys on there that use Big Block Vanguards so you guys are my best bet. The engine is in a Joyner chassis that I have completely converted to a Long Travel Suspension setup. We spend most of our off road time in Glamis dunes and High desert Hard pack. I've done all the mods myself in shop, but there is still alot more that I would like to do and or need help with in getting familiar with these engines and their potential. Here is what I have done so far: -Carb, Mikuni VM 40mm bored out to 42mm. Still fine tuning the jets. -Custom Intake. -Uni Filter with Pre filter Sock. -Custom 2 into 1 equal length Header with a Carbon Fiber Akrapovic Exhaust. -.060 Valve shims (Al Hodge) With valve adjustment at .003. -Degoverned with Gov Lock, Future removal of complete Internal Governor Shaft. -Equus 8068 Tach, still in process of Mounting, problems with inductive connection reading spark. -Custom Crank Case Breather The drivetrain setup is a TEAM CVT to an FNR at 10:1 Ratio. Still need to get familiar with the CVT and its adjustability Before the mods, with the stock 35HP Vanguard, top speed we hit was 30MPH through the whoops. As of last week with all the current mods, Top speed is now 45-50MPH. Stil working on the Jetting on this Mikuni VM Round slide. Took me awhile to get the Range of jest that Im suppose to be in. So Im slowly getting more familiar with these engines and Im very happy with the performance out come. Im still looking into the Timing advance, I'll have to remove the flywheel cover and see if I can figure it out on my own. Question: The dash on this buggy had no Temperature Gauge, but this looks like a temperature sensor. Is this a Temp sensor and if so, what is Optimum running Temperature on these? Heres a pic of the engine and setup. Heres a Jump video of the last trip before any engine Mods. I got some higher jumps in but this was the only one we caught on video before my buddy blew a CV on his RZR on the same Jump. Nothing to Brag about but it sure is alot of fun and a very comfortable ride. Could ride this thing All day long through the dunes. It did well in the dunes but I would have to cut the bowls short about 1/2-3/4 to the top while my buddies in their RZR's would wip around me all the way to the top of the Bowls. Which is why Im going forth with the mods. |

Looks like low oil pressure sender If you have a low oil pressure light on the dash turn the key on pull the wire light will go out if you ground the wire light will come on.

Beater, There was no sensor on the dash. Only sensor it had was the Battery Voltage.
Im not sure how these Big Blocks do in regards to over heating. Which is why I was concerned about adding a temp sensor. |

If you can get that motor to overheat, you're doing better than most.

Heres a clip when I added the Tach.
So far the Tach is working great. At first it didn't work, then read the Trouble shooting on the instructions, Flipped the Inductive pickup, and works! |

Clips of parking lot Carb testing.
Video doesn't do justice of how good the exhaust sounds in person. Its got a nice Low Thump and its drifting the corners now. Didn't do that with stock Engine. |

1989, Great answer, Thats what I need to hear. From the few trips that I've taking the buggy out for testing, I have been very impressed on its performance even as Stock.
Did a few runs through Dumont Dunes with 3 Rzr's and a VW sandrail, they were all impressed and shocked that it was able to keep up and lead a few runs. |

Re: 35HP Vanguard with DIY Mods.
A timing key will help out. A performance cam will really wake it up. Are you looking for more rpms, or more low end?
