scored a command 23 for club car build
My 16 year old son found a shot out gas club car at a roadside sale for a hundred bucks (delivered to our house). We stripped it and cleaned the frame and have started bringing it back to life. I have been searching for an engine for it and found a kohler command 23 for a reasonable price. I was leaning towards a Vegas 440 because they haul a$$ for a great price but I really don't need to go very fast. Just want it to be faster than our other cart a 2001-1/2 48v DS with a high speed motor. I want enough torque to turn 25x13.5x9 tsl swampers. So I figured the best way to do that was Big Block torque. We mostly trail ride and a little mud in the rainy season. We lifted the cart with an 8" a-arm lift from Trademark Carts (site sponsor) and a buddy gave me the wheels and tires (tires are shot and need to be replaced). Next project is to get the engine mounted and order clutches from CPP. Once I figure out how to post pictures I'll show the progress as of now.

Re: scored a command 23 for club car build
We got the motor placed in the cart and it fits pretty good. I was worried about clutch clearance but looks like we won't have any issues. I found a pic of a roll cage/brush guard that looks pretty cool so I think we will build a similar design. We think it looks pretty good. What do you guys think?

If you're looking for a rear seat that looks nice!

Re: scored a command 23 for club car build
If you get a stock clone you will have more power than the CC engine, and it's tame enough to drive in campgrounds etc. The stock clones come with air filters and exhaust/mufflers so they set up really easy. Vegas Carts has one for $369 that has stock compression and is EPA certified. It won't "haul arse", but it gives you room to grow if you want it to. Just sayin....

Re: scored a command 23 for club car build
Slonomo: I agree the stock clone is a good option and the Vegas 440 is a great setup. I was leaning towards Geoff's engine because of his excellent customer service and really impressive products. I called him and left a message and he returned my call within a few minutes. I was impressed as I know he is very busy. However, I picked up a low hour Kohler command 23 hp with 1-1/8" shaft for $400 on my local craigslist which I think is a good deal and will do what I need it to do. After talking to Geoff I am going to get his engine mount and Cart Parts Plus CPP09 drive clutch and CPP10 big block club car driven clutch. Geoff doesn't sell a clutch for my application. I think that will be a good setup. If I'm heading in the wrong direction please let me know because I want to get it right the first time.

Streetbu, we're not looking for a rear seat but thought we could modify the seat area to hold a cold beverage storage system. And maybe the foot rest could be a hitch mounting point. My 16 year old son is a pretty good welder (started him young) he says no problem we can build that we are building this cart together and I'm lovin every minute of it.

The cart is a late 80's from what research i'v done but I'm not sure. The engine that was on it was a 10hp kohler with a thrown rod.

If you are looking at the transaxle input shaft, and turn it CCW with the FWD/REV switch in FWD, does the cart move forward? The motor shaft rotates in a CCW direction.
