Default Probably been asked before....Vanguard swap.

Want to put a 16hp Vanguard in my 99 TXT. Bought a carrier from CPP. Motor is sitting there waiting. But not sure about the clutch right now. Searched through a lot of these threads and I am still unsure. Hopefully someone will smack me upside my head and clear it up for me.

The Vanguard I have has 3" of straight crank sticking out. The stock motor had 2" of tapered. Not sure if I have to cut the new crank down. I know that they make an adaptor so that I can re-use the stock clutch but I'm not sure if I should. Some of the things I've read have lead me to believe that a newer clutch can be adjusted to hit harder than the stock one. In my eyes, that would be nice. Problem is that I haven't seen one with a pulley.

I want the pulley because of the electrics on my cart. The cart has 2 amps, underbody lights, fog lights, light bar, invertor, brake lights, etc. Lot of pull, especially the amps for the stereo (and we use those the most, sort of like a traveling jukebox). I have 2 deep cell wheelchair batteries running in parallel, and they do fine for a while, but they aren't enough to keep up with the draw. It'd be nice to have an alternator keeping everything going while she's running. My thoughts were to run an old school, single wire alternator to power everything up. With that in mind, I would need a clutch with a pulley to spin the alternator. The stock clutch has that but, again, from some of the threads I've read, the stock clutch with the Vanguard is just "ok". Any ideas or knowledge for me?

I think cpp sells a pulley to work with aftermarket clutches, or it may be Vegas carts can't remember but I think what you want to do will work fine.

Thanks for the info DH. Went ahead and called CPP today and talked with Tom. Good guy and he knows his stuff. Told me they sell a pulley that'll mount up as a spacer behind the clutch which'll do what I need. Also confirmed what I had read about re-using the stock clutch. Said the Comet 780 is much better, although his words were a little more colorful and to the point, lol.

Still awaiting the clutch and pulley but I found some other potential issues when I laid the motor on the cradle in the cart.

-Shift cables are going to be too short. Did a little searching on the forum and found that workhorse cables are longer and will work though.

-Oil filter is going to have to be relocated. I know there are kits out there but not sure exactly what I'm looking for. Called NAPA and the man there tried but couldn't help. Cross referenced the filter but still couldn't get anything. I can definitely use some help on this one if anyone knows anything.

-Alternator mount is going to have to be fabbed up and I'm hoping there will be enough room once the clutch is on the shaft.

-The stock exhaust on the Vanguard hits the shift linkage mounts on the diff. Not sure if it's still feasible to keep the stock exhaust or come up with something new. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Here's the lowdown on the remote oil filter. It is pricey.

Remote oil filter kit(also requires 492687 filter adapter for V-twin)
with 18" hoses - 492061
with 30" hoses - 492062
This kit comes with a filter mount, 2 hoses, and some fittings.

Filter adapter(the part that mounts on the motor) - 492687

Parts sold individually
Filter mount without hoses - 495244
18" hoses only - 494724
30" hoses only - 494725

No, these are Briggs part numbers. The only piece you really need is the
Filter adapter(the part that mounts on the motor) - 492687.

Then you can just purchase hoses and a filter mount separately. There are many remote filter mounts available for dune buggies and such.

The 492687 is a Briggs only part. It will run about $50.

I was thinking of getting the whole kit, (this is for a 14hp vtwin)
but if just the mount is available like in the book, I might do that, and
have a buddy of mine that makes hoses fix it up.

The entire kit is about $120.

1989 Marathon, I appreciate the knowledge. Googled up the part and you are dead on about the cost of it. Here's a question. Though my gut tells me to keep the oil filter and relocate it, I am wondering about just plating it off and doing more frequent oil changes. Sound feasible? Biggest issue with that to me, is that I don't know the internals of the motor. By plating it would I be stopping something from getting lubed? Probably will just do the relocation but, at this point in the marriage dept., wife is getting a little ticked about added costs. Gonna have to do some sweet talking to her.
